A B&B full of history. Our host Tammy grew up in Middletown and was well versed on the Wayside Inn and the history of the area. It wasn't busy when we were there, so she spent nearly half an hour talking about this Inn that was established in 1797 and has been in continuous operation since. There was a Civil War skirmish near here for those interested in that era, and nearby is the Belle Grove Plantation that also dates to 1797 and was originally owned by the sister of president James Madison. There are 22 rooms in the Inn, all different, and lots of wood throughout including what appears to be some of the original flooring. A full breakfast is included, with eggs, omelets, pancakes, fruit, bacon, toast, and other items I didn't have room for. Only a mile off I-81 not far from the intersection with I-66, it's a pleasant change from hotel chains and an opportunity to step back in time and get a flavor of the local culture.

Everything was fine. We like the hotel better than the cookie cutter chain options nearby.

Oldest working inn in Virginia.

Pros: Opportunity for innkeepers to have quite a good business here, but impression I got was they were not advertising or using inn's potential to fullest.
Cons: Remove carpet from stairs- safety hazard; redecorate several downstairs front rooms- inviting; repair front pavement-safety hazard; add good gift shop
Location: Shenandoah valley, Wine country, Luray Caverns, Civil War battles, Belle Grove Plantation, Skyline parkway and Washington DC all short drive away.
Very friendly innkeeper and staff. Stayed in room #7. Our bathroom was good size and room pleasant. Accompanying breakfast was very good. Variety of food items offered. The inn had many interesting looking rustic public rooms and a large restaurant - bar. We arrived about 4:15 and were able to survey/ inspect about 1/2 dozen bedrooms upstairs. They were decorated in a charming, historic way; each had a bathroom attached. Ours needed more foam or feathers on the bed mattress as it was lumpy (just as in old days). The restaurant-bar could easily hold 100 people. It was the most charming part of the building as was the antique barn. They had plenty of parking and the large barn and yard-patio were easily able to hold a party or wedding of 60-75 people. We had been traveling most of the day and were looking forward to a good evening meal in a cozy rustic setting with a cold beer or wine glass as advertised on the website. Instead we were told that there was a group of about 70 people coming for a team building event and the staff couldn't possibly feed us, too! Go figure! There was plenty of other tables and also room at the bar, but we were sent away to our choice of any restaurant within a 6 mile radius. Personally, I think that lost money for Wayside Inn, because we spent $40 dollars elsewhere. A well organized, eager young professional chef would be a blessing to this property. Also, carpet in our room really needed vacuuming with a wand around the corners and bedposts.

Unique experience in historic inn...

Pros: This Inn is a perfect choice for something out of the ordinary...a taste of history and a cozy evening when your travels permit.
Location: There was Karaoke in the tavern on the evening when we stayed and many locals? were having a wonderful celebration.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Wayside Inn. We often travel this route and decided to break up our trip on this occasion and try something special. It was a special evening. Each room is different and furnished with antiques. Yes, the floors creak, but that is part of the charm of experiencing history. There were fires burning in the fireplaces in the various public areas and sitting rooms. We were warmly welcomed and were offered a selection from the available rooms. While the Inn itself is old, there are comfortable amenities and the bathroom, shower, etc. are up-to-date and efficient. George prepared an excellent breakfast the next morning, beautifully presented from the fruit cup of fresh berries to the perfectly cooked eggs with breakfast meats. He offered other choices as well but we passed on the blueberry pancakes. It was a nice start to the day and our continued travels, sitting by the fire and reading the local newspapers until our breakfasts arrived!
