I don’t want to be too negative, as we really did enjoy our stay and the staff was lovely, but I don’t think they should use the word “luxury” when describing the room: the tub casing was cracked and the bathroom floor was in poor condition. There were other issues as well. But we slept and ate well, and don’t regret staying there. Just drove the word “luxury” please!

The staff were extremely welcoming and friendly. Their attention to detail was highly appreciated. There was a nice fire in the fireplace. The room and bathroom were clean. And dinner, the Balmoral Chicken, was delicious. The best I’ve had in Scotland. Veggies cooked to perfection as well. Highly recommended.

Authentic and atmospheric

Wonderfully isolated and atmospheric. It was perfectly situated for me to stay 3 nights and drive around exploring Sutherland. Nice staff and guests. More of a rustic lodge feel than dressy hotel. Restrained and authentic

Lovely but dated old country hotel

Hotel was not well staffed and it often took a long time to get service, even to check in. One had to go looking for a staff person. It was often very cold. The room was small and we went for 36 hours with no hot water in our room. The facility is old. But it was a classic Victorian fishing lodge and I would love to see it restored to its former glory.

Since the TV show 'A River Somewhere' in 1997 I have wanted to visit this hotel! For that reason I loved it. The staff were friendly, the food was excellent, parking is plentiful and the scenery magnificent. Lochs are all around with a real history of successful catches! However, I was incredibly sad to see this historic hotel, in this stunning scenery struggling in these current times. Having been a popular resort since 1886 I feel it should be supported and resurrected into 'the place to go' once again. I don't understand why the Scots aren't clambering to reignite a passion for a place with such history in such a unique situation. It's a place where you really can switch off from the world and reconnect with nature. I would recommend to everyone to visit, take your time, drive carefully, look around and someone, for goodness sake, come up with a way to keep this landmark alive!

This was the only hotel that had availability for the one night that we needed whilst doing the NC500 . We were aware it was off the beaten track so was easy to find. On arrival we struggled to park, but once parked we went to check in and the door to the hotel was very narrow so struggled to get a suitcase thru easily. pressed the buzzer for someone to check us in , no one came and after 10 mins went looking for someone. Got up to the room, .. was dissapointed. The room was very dated and not clean , there was mould in the bathroom also . The TV didnt work , had to get it tuned in by man at reception who tried his best , but most the services on it were taken off or missing. So ended up watching TV on a tablet. Can't comment on the food as didnt have any due to the price of the room being expensive for what it was and the food prices being expensive. The rooms could do with refurbishments and upgrades. The property itself was actually quite charming and had a historic feel to it.

Interesting (quirky) lodge a bit shabby round the edges. Hard to tell if it's part way through a gradual renovation or is on a journey of deterioration but everything works and there is plenty of comfortable comunal areas to sit with drinks from the bar. The food in the restaurant and at breakfast was very good. Can be a bit cold as not all areas are well heated but the room was fine with the electric radiator provided.

I have very mixed feelings about my two-night stay at Altnaharra Hotel. There were some huge positives: the staff were superb, the restaurant food was excellent, and the downstairs ambience was exactly what you hope for in a Highland hotel — open fires, comfy sofas, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. The location itself is also incredibly special. I paid around £150 per night room-only via Expedia as a treat while touring the Highlands. First impressions of my single room, “Sika,” were good, but little things soon started to niggle. The old wall heater worked but the room was still cold overnight. The controls area had been painted over and one knob came away, so I couldn’t increase the heat. The bathroom towel rail also didn’t work, making it unpleasantly chilly for showering. The PAT sticker was dated 2010. The bath taps and shower area needed a much deeper clean. To the hotel’s credit, staff quickly provided an extra blanket for my second night, although the first one was dirty and had to be replaced. This was handled politely and promptly, but unfortunately added to the disappointments. That’s what makes this difficult to review. I genuinely loved the communal areas, atmosphere, food, staff, and setting. However, the bedroom itself was tired and disappointing for the price paid. I hope “Sika” is the exception and I was simply unlucky. If travelling solo, I’d suggest requesting a different room. All that said, there is still something undeniably special about the hotel

This hotel is located in a remote stunningly beautiful location. The staff we met named Angelo and Ria were charming friendly and efficient. We enjoyed Breakfast and Dinner, the food was nicely presented and very tasty. Our bedroom and bathroom were pleasant, bed comfortable, but in my opinion could benefit from some updating. Someone suggested to me that the hotel reminded them of being straight out of an Agatha Christie novel -I must say it struck a chord with me! Recommended.
