La sociedad taquileña está basada en el trabajo colectivo y en el código moral Inca "Ama sua, ama llulla, ama quella" (no robarás, no mentirás y no serás perezoso). Actualmente su economía se basa en la pesca, la agricultura de la papa en los andenes y el turismo, recibe anualmente 40,000 turistas. Los taquileños son especialmente conocidos por sus tejidos, los que se encuentran dentro de la más fina artesanía no solo en Perú sino en el mundo. "Taquile y su arte téxtil" fueron honrados al ser proclamados "obras maestras del Patrimonio Oral e Inmaterial de la Humanidad” por la UNESCO. Cabe resaltar que el hilado y el tejido es hecho principalmente por hombres, comenzando a la edad de ocho años. Las mujeres hacen exclusivamente de hilados y tejidos.
