Cozy 1845 Chapel Escape near Appalachian Trail and Fahnestock Park

The Chapel at Hopeland is a unique experience that we had crafted next to a sprawling forest preserve. Built in 1845 for the community's religious needs, the church has now gone through a complete historic restoration for weddings or a romantic stay in the chapel's anteroom. We are a stone’s throw from the Appalachian Trail right on the Dutchess/Putnam line and are less than an hour from Manhattan.

We are minutes from Fahnestock and Hudson Highlands State Parks & the Empire State Trail!

You are next to the Hopeland Forest Preserve which now is over 100 acres and growing. One side borders the Appalachian trail and on the other side of the Appalachian trail is another 200 +- acres of woodland. All the neighbors are nice but you are truly in the country!

Not what we expected

We arrived to find a fan blowing and the whole place reeking of mold/mildew. The bathroom is in a separate building and does not have a proper shower, just a camping shower. We would have been more comfortable in a tent. We left and went to a hotel and asked for a refund, and they are only refunding one night since we dared to use the bathroom in the ten minutes we were there. So if you want to pay 150 to use the bathroom this is the place for you.

Truly a hidden gem. The property and home were nothing short of extraordinary. For those looking for a great location with access to hiking and a one of a kind experience this is the place.

Loved it.

My husband and I loved our time at the chapel. All of the reviews were accurate. After a long hike up breakneck trail, we had a delicious lunch in Cold Spring, then headed to the chapel. We were hoping for a hot shower, and didn’t quite grasp the concept of a “camp shower” (5 gallon bladder of cold water with a small spout to open and close as you need). Once we got over our initial surprise, we adapted and were perfectly content. We headed to the Sloop Brewery only 10 min away to have a great dinner, which live music and delicious beer. After returning, we sat by the perfectly set up fire in the back of the chapel and enjoyed the s’mores kit thoughtfully left by the hosts. The bed was comfortable and we slept well. The kitchen had everything we needed for tea/coffee making. In the morning, we took a nice 2hour hike straight from the chapel onto a section of the AT. It was great. Thanks for a wonderful stay!

Unique and Fun Place to Stay

One of the most unique places we've stayed. as advertised: 1845 chapel, complete with pews and altar and a cemetery out back. And the bonus of a disco light. As someone else said, not for folks who need to be pampered. Toilet, sink and camp shower in a small outbuilding; a few kitchen basics to make food in a microwave or on the grill outside...but the bed is nice and firm and comfortable, the AC is powerful, cools the place down in a few minutes, and it's just a fun stay if you like something out of the ordinary.

Fun and rustic property`

I enjoyed my stay here, and I think the description and other reviews are accurate. The chapel was somewhat eerie on first arrival, but ended up being quite cozy and comfortable. I was a bit disappointed to see that the piano was nonfunctional, and there was an issue with the water so the toilet and sink in the bathroom were not working either. However, Pat was very responsive and got back to me quickly regarding the water issue, and the shower provided is an indoor camp shower which I was still able to use. The whole property was also surprisingly clean which I really appreciated. Definitely go for a "glamping" experience rather than that of a hotel, but I think this would be the perfect home base for someone hiking nearby or if you're looking for something more elevated than true camping.

I truly enjoyed myself here. It is a gorgeous property with wonderful light. There are many seating areas which allow you special moments all throughout the day. Sipping coffee, having a fire, enjoying dinner. I have never felt so relaxed. I highly recommend if you need a little peace and quiet.

Cozy, warm, and steeped in history

What a unique and sweet space! My partner and I were looking for someplace quaint and off the beaten path- we are not “hotel people” and this little chapel did not disappoint! Everything was meticulously clean, check in was easy and the hosts were great commutators. If you need tons of amenities, turn down service, long hot showers, and a flat screen tv, this is NOT your place. But if you want cozy and unique, the pictures are exactly what you’ll find in this tucked away historical gem!
