Outstanding stay at Nishiyama Onsen Keiunkan! The property was larger and more updated than I was expecting- including a choice of 6 different onsen baths to use (2 private and the other 4 alternating between men/women depending on the time of day). The staff were all without fault and absolutely lovely and despite my limited Japanese there we no issues communicating. Complimentary shuttle pick-up at Minobu Station for the 1hr drive to the property. High quality dinner and large Japanese breakfast provided in a private dining room. Overall, an exceptional stay and I feel very privileged to have the opportunity to stay at this 1300+ year old property.

I'm sorry to say that this experience was not at all what we expected. The lobby is beautiful, however the rooms show signs of significant deterioration (water damage). The bathrooms are old and use water from the hotspring - though commendable from an eco perspective this means smelly showers (sulfur) which is an unpleasant experience. The staff were very kind, however training needs improvement as the service was disjointed and awkward. Last but not least our "balcony" room overlooked the roadway and several dilapidated buildings used for staff parking. I can deeply appreciate the historical significance of the location, however the facilities are not worth the price and require significant investment to bring them up to standard.

Absolutely stunning property! Might as well be out of a movie or painting. The staff was incredibly hospitable and an impressive number spoke English. We had no trouble reserving a beautiful private onsen for our desired time. Dinner and breakfast are expansive and potentially adventurous for those not accustomed to more traditional Japanese food. Possibly the best place in the world to come meditate and relax.

The springs were amazing and very warm! The staff while serving the meals was top-notch! If you have the opportunity I'd suggest staying for more than 1 day and doing some hiking/exploring along the river. Beautiful scenery!

A very enjoyable experience as the oldest hotel in the world. The food is a bit intense for foreigners, but excellently presented and flavorful nonetheless. Extremely professional staff. The room has beautiful scenery of the river and a cozy interior space.
