Easily the worst hotel I've seen in 15+ countries

Based on other reviews there are very good rooms and very bad ones. And I got the bad luck. Room 601. Where do I begin? I hate to give a bad review as the staff are very professional, helpful and friendly. However, the room was just a disaster, even if I overlook the budget price point. It would be criminal not to warn others. First, the humid musky smell made it hard to breathe. Next, the bathroom fully floods from as little as a 2 minute shower. The drain simply doesn't work. And other reviews mention this, so why not fix it?? Last, blankets and towels were dirty, and the sheets made my skin crawl/itchy. I suspect they give the terrible room(s) to those who prepay online as you can't do much about it except review them badly when they already have your money. This is easily the worst hotel I have stayed at in 10 years and over 15 countries. The breakfast buffet was great, and the staff assisted in ordering an early morning taxi, so I can't rate the place zero, however comfort of the room is the main thing. Instead of cooking a feast that no one even eats, why not invest $5 a day in repairing things or washing the bedding?

Perfect for a one night stop over

Dropped into hotel for a one night stay between local destinations . Staff accommodated us perfectly after arriving early 6.30am with day room until our family room was ready. Perfect central Hanoi location also. Not a swish hotel if you are looking for luxury!

The room given to us on top floor was more a storeroom converted into a room. The furniture were all old and broken. With other reviews I guess the room below were better. We got upgraded to suite when we moved to another hotel. It is even Stevens

Rethink if you have booked this Hotel

We arrived at Icon 36 and were told that the hotel was fully booked, and we would be moved to their sister Hotel, which was supposed to give us a bigger and better room, Upon entering the room, we it was smaller and older then the room we originally booked. There was a cup with a burnt pineapple core in it which caused the room to reek of smoke for the 2 nights we stayed. Also in the early hours of both days, we were awoken by screaming and yelling and slamming of doors which continued for half an hour. If you are considering staying here, I would think again, as you will probably be fobbed off onto this second class room. We were very disappointed with Icon 36

Wonderful experience

From the time we arrived to the time we left our experience with this hotel could not be faulted. We also would like to thank all the staff and management for a wonderful stay and a special thank you to Haon who organized a trip to halong bay and Sappa. Also thanks for looking after our bags while away on the trips and the extras that we did not expect. Would recommend this hotel and certainly come back and stay here again.

A good little hotel in the old quarter within easy reach of many bars, restuaurants and walking distance to the local bus station and the lake. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The rooms are basic but comfortable. I would stay here again.

The bed was on the hard side and my window opened into a brick wall (not an alley or a narrow space facing a brick wall but bricks about 1 inch from the glass. Other than that, everything was great. Very clean, nice decor, nice bathroom, decent breakfast (free) and EXCELLENT staff. I've been traveling continuously for 17 months, studying at hostels, yurts, tents, guesthouse a and hotels rated 2-5 stars, and while this place was about a 3 star, I'd say it was the best overall experience and great value for the money.

Single travellers, beware of the Superior room

Booked 3 nights and was put to a 10sqm cubicle (like in a $10 guesthouse, but newly renovated and clean) with a tiny window 1,5 m from the floor. Was tired to complain at first, but next morning the management explained they have 2 Superior room types (Single and Double), and they put me to the former "because I came alone", as it "should be fine" for just me. Well, by far not the worst room I've stayed during my years in Asia, but then it should be also "fine" for me to bargain the price - the facilities I paid for were stated as a decent (22sqm - minus bathroom should be 16-18sqm) sized room with a proper window, and the room on the sole photo (for Superior type) looked exactly like that, not like the one I got. Some facilities were under-par to the description, namely: no bathtub, TV which is neither 32" nor LCD, safety box not attached to the wall - it's more of nit-picking though, and I could be happy with all that, should the room itself be up to the standards promised. Wi-Fi is of "hit or miss" type - if you need to do any business, have your 3G/4G handy. Well, on the good side the staff are attentive and pleasant, and the buffet breakfast is the best I had in Hanoi so far. Thus I feel pity to put such a low rating - but I'm convinced that deception shouldn't be tolerated, and I suggest the hotel to sell "Superior Single" rooms as a separate category (with proper pics and facility lists), to avoid further disappointment, as my review is already second of this kind.

Good hotel, great staff

I had previously travelled as part of a tour group and so continued on to stay in their hotel by booking online. There was alot of confusion with bookings as they seemed to have missed one of the tour group so they were rooms short however everything was sorted by later in the afternoon. The breakfast was lovely with quite a bit of choice. The shower and air con were the best I'd had in my whole trip in Vietnam. The staff were really friendly and helpful. Whilst it's not in the tourist area it's only a 5/10 minute walk so convenient once you've orientated yourself.

Not as expected

Dat and Annette were phenomenal. They both were so friendly and helpful. My main issues was room was well smaller than indicated, and wanted the 32" tv indicated but got a 18" old box tv that couldn't see anything on. Hotel was in decent condition but definitely not a 4-5. Lot of rust around the room. If not for gracious service would rate lower.

Good for what you pay

The location of Icon 36 is perfect... Right in the old quarter, 15/20 minutes walk from both the Mausoleum/Citadel to the West and the drinking/restaurant area to the East. Staff are very happy, constantly willing to help, very polite and generally do all they can to provide you with the most comfortable stay. It was helpful to have the tour bookings desk in the front lobby, ready to organise tours across north Vietnam for the next day if need be. The taxi to and from the airport is easy and largely inexpensive. English spoken by the receptionist staff is changeable but largely understandable. Its great that they store your luggage for free if you want to leave it and travel overnight elsewhere. Bedrooms seemed incomplete at points. Bathrooms lacking the right stuff, bedroom missing a kettle. Our TV was strange... It would only work if you kept your finger on the power button. But we spent so long out that these amenities weren't needed.

Nice hotel with great staff

The hotel is a little way off (just abit) but there is many stalls nearby to have pho for your meals at local's price (so it kind of makes up for it). The staff were really great! They were friendly and really helpful especially since our travel timings and plans were somewhat atypical.

relaxing in Hanoi

staff at Icon36 are very friendly and helpful. We arrived at 5:00 AM after a 14 hour train trip and they let us rest on the lounges in the Foyer until they had a room ready. They offered us a room for a shower and made a room ready for us as quickly as possible. This was 2 days before Christmas which is a busy time. The room was comfortable and clean. Would stay here again.

It was alright overall but the renovation from the neighborhood should be monitored as they start the renovation job as early as 7am which is quite disturbing and I could not get good sleep

Superb friendly little place, ideally located.

Great stay at the Dong Thanh. Staff went out of their way to provide information and great courtesy like looking after our bags for us well after our initial 2nt stay. Value for money is excellent , did not try the food as very close to wonderful street food.

A safe place with excellent service !

A good value budget hotel right in the old quarter Hanoi. Comfy beds with fast wifi & good breakfast. In comparison with other hotels I stayed throughout Vietnam, this hotel is not really special but just their service. The staff service stands out from others and should be rated as five star one. When I checked -in , the customer service Ivy , greeted us with her smile , she then offered free drinks and gave us a map to recommend some travel tips in Hanoi. Even we already had our own itinerary and already booked online our Ha Long Bay trips , she still seems to be very kind assisting with our requests.
