The Hawkeye Buffalo Farm in Fredericksburg Iowa is a hidden gem. The town of Fredericksburg itself is tiny. Even smaller than my home town. The winters are harsh so it makes for a great place for these buffalo to thrive.
The Farm is family owned and operated and it just so happens I am related to this family by marriage, so I was fortunate enough to get the family discount.
The tour started out in their little shop in one of the many barns. Martha our tour guide gives us a little information on the Buffalo and the area. After a smudging we climbed onto a wagon pulled by a tractor. Once we were all on the wagon we headed off in search of Buffalo.
The last time ( back in July) I took this tour it took us a while to find the Buffalo but the scenery is beautiful so it was no big deal.
After we found the Buffalo, or maybe they found us, we were able to feed them corn (still on the cob) that was provided by our knowledgeable tour guide. It is quite a thrill to be able to feed this huge creatures that have walked the earth for hundreds of years. The sheer size of them is intimidating and they definitely know how to throw their weight around.
After we ran out of corn and the Buffalo slowly lost interest we headed back towards the farm. The ride itself is an adventure.
Once back at the barn I suggest purchasing the Buffalo Jerky...it is AMAZING!!! Overall the Hawkeye Buffalo Farm is a great adventure for your family, a group, or even just yourself if you are looking for something different to experience.
