This is an old train station converted into a home but with many of the old features like the ticket counter, still intact. There is 1/4 mile of the North Platte River, barn, chickens, and wild animals to enjoy. We’ve stocked this unique stay with antiques, railroad memorabilia, Wyoming wildlife mounts, and the comforts of home. Welcome to The Depot
Please read the following to understand the home and the property...
This home was built in 1908 and was originally the Powder River, Wyoming train depot located about 50 miles west of here. It was moved to this location in 1998 and renovated into a home. This home was recorded with the National Register of Historic Places while still in Powder River.
There are some unique objects here for your enjoyment, but please be careful as many of them are irreplaceable. For example, the radio and the organ are really only for looks as they are delicate and easily broken. Also, the cash register is from 1924 and similar to what was used at the ticket counter a couple decades after The Depot was built. We would appreciate if you do not touch the buttons or try to make it function.
This house utilizes a well. The water is hard and does not have a very pleasant taste. For this reason, we have drinking and cooking water available. Also, please follow the instruction on the dishwater to get the dishes spotless. The water does have a lot of iron so we do not use bleach in it as this will simply make laundry turn red. However, other laundry soap and dryer sheets are provided for your use. Breakfast provided by a host, may be made available upon request.
There are paper products in the cupboard between the stove top and the ovens, or you may use the regular dishes anywhere within the home. We simply ask that you treat them with respect and return them to their proper locations. A first aid kit can be found in the pantry across from the refrigerator. A fire extinguisher can be found in the cupboard under the stairs next to the dining room.
You will notice that there is a train nearby and you may hear it as it sounds its horn while passing by. Closer yet is the river and we ask that you exhibit extreme caution as every year someone drowns in the North Platte in the Casper area because they do not properly respect it. There are animals on the property, some that are wild (whitetail and mule deer, antelope, turkeys, racoons, mink, skunks, etc.) and some that are domesticated (horses, goose, turkey, chickens, cats, etc.). As you may be aware, animals are unpredictable and again we ask that you treat them with respect and if uncertain keep your distance. Animals can sometimes bite or nip because they are frightened or angry and other times because they simply think you have food. For that reason, the horse boarding facility across the easement road is off-limits. If you wish to ride, horse rides may be available on a limited basis with arrangements made ahead of time.
Please note that there are other outbuildings including the barn which have been locked and we would ask that you respect these areas and not try to enter them, unless special arrangements have been made for a special event. Please stay off any and all equipment, ESPECIALLY the haybale elevator on the outside of the barn which is very dangerous. Also, we ask that you don’t burn out side because most of the year in Wyoming is dry and is a high fire risk.
The property is unique as it has over an 1/8th of a mile North Platte River included as part of the property. Feel free to fish the river but do not go past the fence upstream and bridge downstream as that property belongs to others. Please note that you must follow applicable game and fish laws.
Feel free to feed the animals a reasonable amount. We will try to supply proper grain for the chickens and the horse as well as the wild turkeys located on the porch of the barn shop in a sealed container. Stay clear of the raccoons, rare skunks, and even rarer mink that you may see around. They are not friendly.
You may notice certain times of the year there are plentiful amounts of bugs because we are located on the river. You may also find bugs such as spiders on occasion in the home. We do our best to spray, but some bugs are simply inevitable. We recommend that if you go outside, you use bug spray to protect yourself from their bite. If you have any problems with any critters let us know.
Please feel free to enjoy the home and don’t forget to check out the night sky. The stars are beautiful without all the lights. Certain times of the year without too much vegetation the river glistens in the light from the stars and the moon. Other times of the year you will find baby turkeys and fawn deer and antelope that have just been born and run freely throughout the property especially near the house. We certainly love The Depot and hope you love it as much as we do! Now go ahead and get……
