Nice ocean view

There is lack of maintenance in all areas, glass door to the balcony stuck, shower door imposible to close, a lot of missing poeces in the wood floor. Very old TV.

Good deal.

Pros: Free breakfast, Quiet
This hotel had some really nice parts n a few not. We decided to adjust our expectations the whole trip so that no matter the good or bad, we were going to enjoy it. Ocotal is a very small town w narrow roads w lots of potholes, poor, n hard to get around. Thankfully we didn't rent a car, but got a taxi, so it was all good. For the good...they have a concierge that is very helpful. We took a day trip to Arenal Volcano zipline tour. BEST EXPERIENCE EVER! (He got us a taxi who drove us all 3 hours...but so worth it. Their tour was the zipline, dinner, and hot spring pools.) Bkfts were very good Costa Rican n regular food, w birds n iguana right there. Awesome view atop the hill, the ocean one way, n mansions the other. (Get them to drive you up, don't walk unless you want the exercise.) The pool area during the day is very clean with a beautiful view. They offered boat activities...fishing, snorkling, scuba. Now the not so good. Got there at night, were handed a metal key, n realized the hotel wasn't the Ritz. The room was similar to one of the least expensive kinds of name brand hotels in the US. That's OK, we just thot it was going to be diff. so it was disappointing. The bay is not really for swimming or snorkling, which we thot we could do. It seemed dirty. It's more of a boat kind of place. It's off the beaten path, so you have to take a taxi to town (5-10 minutes drive). Overall good experience, tho.

Beautiful!

The service we received was excellent. The hotel's restaurant is at the top of a cliff and has a fantastic view. The food was great and the service was even better. We stayed in one of the Junior Bungalows down by the beach and really enjoyed our room! The beach is beautiful; salt and pepper during the day and black sand at night. We had a great time and would absolutely stay again!

Beautiful Beach + excellent dive shop

We stayed at this hotel in April, 2008. Our small room was on top of the hill with a fantastic view of the surrounding ocean. The room was clean, the air conditioning was adequate, and the price was reasonable. There is cable tv in the rooms, and Internet service in the lobby. The hotel serves a wonderful breakfast at its restaurant, however you can get a much better dinner at the Playas del Coco town beach area. The most important fact is that this hotel has the best diving facility in that area of the country. Wonderful competent dive staff, good shop which includes Nitrox for those certified. The local beach area and water are clean, and the snorkeling is great. There are local vendors who rent kayaks for those brave enough to fight the tricky currents outside of the area. Be careful, there are no lifeguards, and your not in Disneyland. There is also a wonderful little restaurant on the beach for drinks and lunch. So if your looking for a beautiful quiet, secluded area, with good facilities this is the place. You will need to rent a car if your going to see other areas of the country, and the driving can be tough. We spend most of our time on or around the water and did not see much of the rest of the country. That will be on our next trip, which will be sooner rather the later. Really like Costa Rica and its people, although I am a little worried about unchecked development.

Loved this place!

Wanted a unique hotel that was quite and Costa Rican in style and right on the beach. Did not want a giant hotel on a beach. At Ocotal this is exactly what I got. Wildlife was all around us, amazing views, the perfect place to sit back and relax and close to some great touring sites. Food at the restaurant was overpriced and ok, better to go to the nearby town for some great seafood dinners at half the cost.

Washed out

The accomodations were adequate for a stay on the beach and day tripping. Rooms were in drastic need of updating and repair. No headboard until day two of our stay. The room safe and closet doors were broken. The staff was friendly and responsive for the most part. The pool bar closed at 4:00 ( when everyone was arriving!)\nThe most dissapointing part was the last day when a thundershower caused toilets to back up and the roof to leak. We sat with no electricty, wet bedding , soaked luggage for over two hours in the dark! When we called the front desk they told us they would move us to another room but only after the electricity came back on. It was too dark to pack and too late to go the bar!! When we asked for a table at the restaurant they balked at the fact that we had no reservations. To top it off, when we asked for compensation we were given NOTHING.
