I loved that we had to take a ferry out to the island; it made it seem even more exotic, and it gave us a fantastic view! All the staff were very friendly and helpful, and the room was cozy! I would definitely stay here again.

Great view. Some scattered junk in the back made it look a little too rustic. The empty water fountain at the entrance made it look run down. Loved the ferry boat ride and service

Perfect location

Still needs major renovations/repair from hurricane. A bit disappointing if judging from online pics. Hotel is a true Caribbean gem & needs some serious TLC so it can be in its glory!

staff was very friendly and helpful. Beach on the cay was ideal for families. Room was clean, comfortable and quiet most of the time. When it was not quiet I only wish I had been invited to the party. Though hurricane Irma repairs are not complete I will stay at HOTC on all future trips to STX.

Perfect vacation

Pros: Location..location..location! Easy access to beach and the board walk.. The beach was very nice...clean..easy to enter water..nice chairs.
Cons: There is a outdoor foot wash but we would have liked a overhead shower to rinse the salt water off before entering the pool.
We loved the color of the water..the breeze..the staff was friendly and helpful . It was relaxing and if you wanted more to do...taking the ferry shuttle to the boardwalk was easy. The shuttle boat drivers were friendly and helpful. There are alot of good places to eat with variety at reasonable prices. The excursions we took with Big Beards,to Buck Island and Sweenys' Island tour we informative, educational and fun! Even though the hotel is older, it is part of the charm. The management is making improvements everyday. We travel alot and we think this is a little piece of heaven!

Nice comfortable older Hotel

The location was great with the beach right outside the hotel room and in great proximity to Christiansted. We rode a ferry over for Christiansted and back everyday

Fantasy Island,BUT

Location: Lots of restaurants on the boardwalk. Buck Island is amazing. We did the bio-luminescent kayak tour at Salt River Marina, very cool.
Fantasy location BUT the hotel is very rundown.Staff is friendly and helpful (front desk though not so much). A lot of stairs and no elevator. Hotel doesn't have a restaurant. There is a restaurant/bar on the beach but it's not affiliated, so you have to have your card or cash, and it's open for breakfast and lunch but not for evenings. There is no parking so you have to park on the streets in town. Streets are not marked well for where you can't park. We were towed twice. We love St Croix but very disappointed with Hotel on the Cay. We fell in love with the Caribbean after staying here over 30 years ago. It was sad to see it's current condition.

Nice boat ride to an old hotel

Pros: Staff was friendly. Not a lot of people on the beach. The boat to and from the island.
Cons: Rooms updated, damage fixed, clean and repaint the water feature, SOLID doors. Railings replaced, Free umbrellas/cabanas for guests, Bathroom upgrades
Location: Located in a very run down area of the island, wild chickens, homeless, building in ruins, lots of trash, poverty, disabled cars everywhere.
Looking from the main island to the hotel looks nice. BUT once you get to your room you might be disappointed. They put us in the wrong room with a sliver of a bay view the first night. They knocked on our door at 8:30am and called at 8:35am telling us we were suppose to have checked out the day before! Explained to them we just got there and they said we were in the wrong room! We were happy because the room was in poor condition. Packed up, went to lobby and decided to "upgrade" to a suite. The second night the power went out for over an hour which meant NO A/C! It is not worth the money. If you are on a tight budget and do not care about where you lay your head then this is the place for you. It is very old. They were painting the exterior while we were there. The beach is maybe 200 feet long with boats moored less then 150 ft from the beach, not a ocean view from beach, it is a bay view full of boats. The bar is efficient but slow. Expect to pay $10 for an omelet and toast, nothing more. The doors are louvered with broken slats so if someone walked by they could push up a slat and see into your room. Plus you can hear everything going on outside your room. You have to fight with the sliding doors to the balconies to get them open. Railings are scary! Water damage in bathroom. Bathrooms are so small 5'x 6' even in the suites. The water feature was gross, dirty and had scum in it. If you have trouble walking this is not the hotel for you! Staff was friendly though.
