Less touristy area w/ restaurants/bars and subway

Location was pretty convenient. Hotel staff was kind. Hotel room was the issue: 1) The housekeeping staff would ignore the "Do not disturb" sign and on two occasions walked in (without knocking either!). One time they came in and cleaned while we were out despite the do not disturb sign. 2) Air conditioning would shut off after 1-2 hours so if the room was still warm, you have to restart it. This was annoying in middle of the night. It never hit the target temperature. 3) Toilet had slow leak and every hour or so the tank would fill. 4) Wifi was slow and unstable.

Great location and typical European hotel

Pros: The location was great and the pool on the roof had a spectacular view.
Cons: The breakfast was expensive and not all that great.
Location: It was located within walking distance to Las Ramblas and the subway was just outside the front door.
We had three people in our room so I slept on sofa bed. The room was large enough but sparse in luxury. It had hardwood floors and Ikea style furniture. The were no windows to the exterior of the hotel just to the interior.

Great hotel in a great location!

Hotel Barcelona Universal is a wonderful hotel, in an amazing part of the city.  Right off the Paral-lel metro stop, you can easily walk or ride to both the downtown and beach.  The hotel staff is very friendly and helpful with wonderful recommendations.  The roof deck pool has some of the best views in the city and is a great place to cool off after a busy day of sightseeing.  The rooms were quite comfortable and live up to the pictures on the website.  I will definitely stay here again!

Underwhelmed

We just spent a week here for our honeymoon.  The experience was varied enough that I wanted to write a review.  I'll start with the negatives, as those were our initial impressions.  We were barely acknowledged at check-in, let alone welcomed.  The woman checking us in got on the phone and stayed on it throughout the process, even walking away at one point to chat to someone in the back room.  No one told us how to turn on the lights in the room, turn on the TV, change the A/C settings (all very different than in the States or my recent stay in Italy).  We had to find a maintenance guy to show us.  The hotel bar was closed when it was posted as open.  Towels were hard to come by at the pool.  The mini fridge was not on and wouldn't turn on.  The bedroom door wasn't flush in its frame so corridor noises could be heard. Later in the stay things did improve, we learned who the friendly/competent/engaged employees were and some of them really were helpful and pleasant.  The breakfast was good every day, we were glad we paid for that.  Room service was pleasant and maid service was good.  The pool was a nice feature and the views from the roof were gorgeous.  The location itself was also very handy for walking places/taking the Metro. Overall though, it wasn't a great experience, it was a mediocre one.  We laughed that it was 4 star prices with 2 star service. I'd certainly return to Barcelona, but I wouldn't choose this hotel again.

This place was perfect for a long weekend.

Pros: Close restaurants, Free Internet, Quiet, clean
Cons: expensive breakfast
Super clean and quiet. Nicely appointed. Beds were very comfortable. Metro station right outside the door. Plenty of nearby places to walk for breakfast/dinner. We were very happy we stayed here.

Good location, easy accesible Metro right outside the door

Pros: Free Internet, Quiet, close to metro
Cons: expensive breakfast
Stayed for almost 1 week, upgraded to a suite on the 9th floor (paid). Room average but spacious and comfortable. Another perk is the added private balcony with amazing views of the Montjuic and the city, another plus is the private whirlpool bathtub which is a heaven-sent after a long day of sightseeing. Staff courteous nothing special except for a 1 or 2 employees (Edlyn from the restaurant and Christian from the reception desk). Breakfast was expensive but filling with a lot of variety to chose from. Would come back to this hotel? Maybe. Probably for the metro accessibility other than that might try other hotels with the same perks.

Great location. Very nice staff.

Pros: Close restaurants, Free Internet
Very nice hotel with very helpful staff. The room was a little small but very comfortable. Bath facilities were very clean and bathroom well stocked with towels and paper products. Hotel located within walking distance to various attractions. Lots of restaurants close by. Rooftop pool was clean and inviting. We had the buffet breakfast which was very good but a little pricey. We would definitely stay there again.
