Attractions in St. Croix
Sugarcane plantations and rum distilleries dot this small island. In order to get a good feel for its colonial history, visit the Estate Whim Plantation Museum, which tells the story of what life was like as a Cruzan living in the 18th century. Whim is the only sugar plantation museum in the Virgin Islands. The twelve-acre site features slave quarters, the Great House, mill, and factory complex.
Fort Frederik also provides a look back at St. Croix's rich history. Originally erected to protect the island from pirates, this fortification was also the site of a huge emancipation rally, when thousands of slaves demanded their freedom in 1848. Don't miss Fort Christiansvaern overlooking the water and the nearby Danish Custom House.
For the Active Vacationer
As you would expect, many of the activities on this island involve the water. The sky blue color is intoxicating and visible from much of the island. The Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge offers a chance to take a dip and possibly see one of its leatherback sea turtles nesting. Since this is a refuge, hours of operation are limited. Visitors there may also recognize the beach from the last scene of the movie Shawshank Redemption. Billed as being in Mexico, it was actually filmed at Sandy Beach.
In addition to a number of water sports, St. Croix offers golfers a choice of three courses. With scenic water views of the shimmering Caribbean Sea and a four-star rated course by Golf Digest, selecting the right course will be a challenge, so why not play all three?
For Those Who Prefer Island Time
Cruzan Rum Distillery gives tours and educates the public on the production process of Cruzan Rum. At the end of the tour, guides will mix up a delicious concoction and bottles of rum are available for purchase.
There is also one full-service casino in the US Virgin Islands. As a popular destination, this stylish casino is comfortable, clean, safe and housed within an all-inclusive beach resort. Visitors can try their luck on a favorite game or learn a new one through a resort gaming lesson.
