Borobudur and Selogriyo Terraced Rice Fields

Borobudur is the world's largest Buddhist temple and a UNESCO World Heritage masterpiece located in Magelang, near Yogyakarta. Built in the 9th century during the Sailendra Dynasty, this colossal structure features nine stacked platforms crowned by a central dome, adorned with over 2,600 relief panels and 504 Buddha statues. Each relief tells ancient stories of Buddhist teachings, creating a spiritual journey as you ascend to the top. At sunrise, Borobudur offers a breathtaking view as mist rises over the surrounding Menoreh Hills and Mount Merapi in the distance.

Just 10 kilometers north lies the hidden gem of Selogriyo. To reach it, you will trek for about 30-40 minutes through a charming Javanese village, crossing small rivers and lush hills. The reward is spectacular: emerald-green terraced rice fields cascading down the hillside like giant steps. Unlike the crowded temple, Selogriyo is tranquil and authentic. You can meet local farmers, hear the wind in the rice stalks, and enjoy one of Java's most peaceful landscapes. Together, Borobudur and Selogriyo perfectly combine cultural grandeur and natural serenity in one unforgettable day trip from Yogyakarta.
