The splendid swing bridge is the symbol of Taranto. It connects the island of the ancient village to the new city, crosses the channel that connects Mar Grande to Mar Piccolo. The swing bridge is opened periodically, by swinging the two halves to one side, to allow passage for large naval vessels. Built in 1887, it was one of the most futuristic engineering works of the City of the Two Seas.

The Doric Temple, next to the current Palazzo del Comune, is certainly the oldest temple in Magna Graecia. The origins of the temple are very remote and date back to the first quarter of the sixth century BC. Although only the two Doric columns remain of the splendor of the past, numerous studies have been able to reconstruct the original structure, which is assumed to have been built before those of Syracuse and Paestum.

Taranto Catherdral - Duomo of San Cataldo
  • 20m
The cathedral of San Cataldo (or cathedral of San Cataldo) is the seat of the chair of the Metropolitan Archbishop of Taranto. Some historians define it as the oldest cathedral in Puglia, initially dedicated to Santa Maria Maddalena and then to San Cataldo, bishop of Taranto in the 7th century. The current external and internal architectural conformation is the result of various construction phases, of restoration, renovation and expansion interventions.
Torre Dell’Orologio
  • 10m
The result of a series of centuries-old transformations of the area, since the Middle Ages it has represented the heart of the commercial life of the city. The modern arrangement dates back to 1992. On the eastern side stands the Clock Tower (mid-eighteenth century)
Piazza Fontana
  • 10m
Place of meeting and trade, Piazza Fontana, formerly called "Piazza Maggiore" or "Piazza Grande", was built thanks to the Byzantine reclamation of the tenth century. In the Middle Ages, in fact, the Emperor Nicephorus II Foca started an impressive reorganization of the urban spaces of the city of Taranto, expanding them with a reclamation to the sea. The so-called "Cittadella" was located in this area of the city, a fortified area built several times starting from 1404, the period from which Raimondello Orsini del Balzo chose Taranto as the seat of his vast principality. The so-called "Cittadella" was demolished several times between 1884 and 1893.
Ponte Sant'Egidio Maria da Taranto - Ponte di Porta Napoli
  • 5m
The stone bridge, also called Ponte di Porta Napoli and dedicated today to Sant'Egidio Maria da Taranto, is a 115 long masonry structure with only three arches overlooking the natural canal to the north-west of the city.
