What you can expect

The traditional settlement of Ano Verga is built on the eastern side of Mount Kalathi at an altitude of 860m. and is only 16 km from the city of Kalamata. The traditional Greek environment with the old stone houses, the multitude of deserted churches, the narrow cobbled streets, the fountains that run gurgling water, with the walnut, mulberry, fig, cherry and other trees are a rare image and give a special color in the picturesque settlement preserved from the period of the Turkish occupation. Starting from Ano Verga, a beautiful path with an unlimited view of the Messinian gulf opens before us. Leaving the village, the path continues downhill and passing through various fields we arrive at the first houses of the Kato Verga settlement. The first notable point worth stopping at is the view from the traditional “Petralono” tavern. Continuing we reach the church of Evangelistria, of maximum historical importance, with its large enclosure and space for stopping and resting. Then crossing the paved path we are led to one of the most ancient olive mills. The last stop is the big fountain of the village, which is also of historical importance from the years of the Turkish occupation, and finally we end up under the tavern of the same name “Selitsa” where the paved path joins the asphalt.
