Description

The township of Soweto, once a segregated area under apartheid, represents the heart of South Africa's 20th-century struggle against injustice. Uncover dark political history and glimpse into the life of a vibrant community as you visit key sites in Soweto's past and present.

Head southwest from the city center of Johannesburg to the township of Soweto, built on rolling hills and home to more than 2 million people. First, visit Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, the largest on the African continent, and stand on the footbridge to look out over the far-reaching rows of houses.

Visit the Hector Pieterson Memorial dedicated to the 1976 Soweto Uprising, a series of pro-democracy protests led by high school students against the apartheid regime. Spend some quiet moments reflecting on Hector Pieterson, a 13-year-old student who was killed by police during the protests.

Stop at the modest brick house that revolutionary and South African president Nelson Mandela once called home, now a National Heritage monument and museum. Afterward, visit the nearby home of Archbishop Desmond Tutu, a leading social rights activist and opponent of apartheid.

As you learn about the complexities of Soweto's history, pick up enlightening background information from a local guide. Your tour leaves you with a greater understanding of the township's key role in dismantling apartheid, as well as its present and future.

Tour was good and the drivers were great (had two - one did the tour and a second dropped us back to our hotel which was ok by us) - downside company changed collection time from 8:30am to 7:00am without notice - forced us to miss paid breakfast at hotel. Tour driver did let us pop into McDonalds to grab food so give then a 4 not a 5.

Very informative . We spent a good amount of time in Soweto and then after lunch spent time at the very interesting Apartheid Museum
