What you can expect

Venture out of the city with a small group, and immerse yourself in the antebellum world of Louisiana's River Road plantations. Walk beneath a canopy formed by centuries-old oak trees at St Joseph Plantation, and learn sobering stories about slavery in the South at historic Laura Plantation.

After you're picked up from your hotel, ride out into the fabled River Road region, passing by cypress-filled swamps to reach the elegant plantations lining the banks of the mighty Mississippi. Cruise along the shores of Lake Pontchartrain, and listen as your guide shares what life was like for Louisiana residents—slaves and owners alike—on the sugar plantations of the antebellum South.

Arrive at St Joseph Plantation, a jewel of Greek Revival architecture, tucked at the end of a sun-dappled lawn. Follow guides around the estate to see the lavish interiors of an ancestral home with original slave cabins and visit a Creole-style, family-owned, working sugar cane plantation, in operation since 1877.

Continue on down the River Road, hearing about the history of plantations like Whitney, Oak Alley and Evergreen before arriving at Laura Plantation, an evocative Creole estate. Follow your guide through the main house as you hear tragic tales about 4 generations of Creole owners and their slaves. Then, weave through the sugarcane fields and formal gardens to reach one of the remaining 1840s slave cabins, where the West-African folk tales of cunning Br'er Rabbit were recorded.
