Spend a day exploring two fascinating gems of ancient Mayan civilization on your own with visits to ruins of Yaxchilan and Bonampak from Palenque. First stop at Bonampak to see ruins dating back to the 7th century, then board a cruise on the Usumacinta River and make your way to historic Yaxchilan.
Get picked up early in the morning for the long drive from Palenque to Bonampak. Upon arrival, step out for time to explore the ancient Maya archaeological site on your own. Visit the Temple of Murals, whose interior is decorated with stunningly well-preserved wall paintings that depict rituals, past rulers, and scenes from history.
After discovering the heritage of Bonampak, get transported to the Usumacinta River, where you embark on a cruise toward the ancient city of Yaxchilan. One of the most powerful Maya states on the river, Yaxchilan is filled with preserved structures that reveal the history of the place. Visit Structure 33, which features a typical Mayan sloped roof and beautifully carved stone lintels above the doorways. Once you've explored the city to your heart's content, return to your drop-off point in Palenque.
