What you can expect

Embark on a pleasant hike along the Levada do Castelejo, offering breathtaking views of Madeira's north coast. Admire the views of sleepy villages and ghost towns set against impressive cliffs, while discovering the rare flora and fauna that thrive on the island.

As you walk, pass through lush banana plantations, terraced fields, and vibrant emerald forests, all providing unique perspectives of Madeira’s rugged landscape, including the towering inland peaks and the iconic Penha da Águia (Eagle's Rock).

This impressive levada (aqueduct) irrigates the lands of Santo António and Sao Martinho. Walk along the levada and discover the ghost town of Fajã, where approximately 30 people once lived and worked. The town was abandoned in the 1980s, leaving behind charming, green-covered houses.

Your guide will share fascinating insights into the history and purpose of the levadas, as well as the lives of local people, all while you hike through Madeira’s forested, volcanic terrain.
