Description

Venture into the heart and soul of Belize City to tour the waterfront township’s colonial architecture, raffish downtown, and bustling waterfront. Immerse yourself in Belizean history and culture as your guide leads you through this charmingly ramshackle metropolis's past and present.

Take a step into the 1800s, when English and Spanish settlers conquered Belize City, turning it into a massive port for logging the country's rich forests. Learn about the devastating Hurricane Hattie of 1961 that nearly obliterated the whole city. Forced to start from scratch, the Belize government sought to restore the many colonial-style, clapboard buildings interspersed among modern structures along the narrow streets.

Tour St. John’s Cathedral, with a brick façade constructed from bricks used as ballast in the hulls of ships sailing from Europe. The journey continues at the seaside Government House, now a museum filled of historical exhibits and modern Belizean art. At the Belize City Museum, tour a former prison now housing exhibits on art and history. Visit the city's modern open-air markets to interact with locals peddling produce, fish, and other goods, and check out the iconic Swing Bridge in action before your downtown tour concludes.
