What you can expect

Gather your family and friends for free-for-all fun in Hokkaido’s famous Lake Shikotsu! Frolic in and around the lake’s crystal-clear waters, which partially freeze in the height of winter. Walk on ice, jump in the ice-cold lake, and play with snow!

Lake Shikotsu in Hokkaido is a year-round hotspot for nature lovers because of its magnificent, untouched beauty. Its waters are among Japan’s clearest blue. Throughout the year, outdoor enthusiasts visit this area for a trek around the lake, or otherwise head into the lake itself — kayaking, boating, and stand-up paddleboarding are extremely popular!

Meet your group at the Ocean Days shop near Lake Shikotsu, where you’ll prepare for the experience with your guide. After registration and a brief orientation, you’ll change into your trusty gear: a drysuit, water-resistant gloves, and water shoes or boots. With a drysuit, you can comfortably move around and stay warm, even in the middle of winter.

Then, head out to the snowy area surrounding Lake Shikotsu, and enjoy the highlight of your itinerary! Set out to walk on the partly frozen lake, and bring out your inner child as you play with snow and ice. Your suit is made of waterproof material and is equipped with air-tight seals, so don’t worry about freezing! Just have fun frolicking in the snow, diving into the ice-cold water, making a snow angel, or simply running around the lake gleefully!

Take time to admire the scenery as well. Lake Shikotsu is the northernmost non-freezing lake in Japan. In midwinter, its edges and lakeside wonders freeze up, though — creating a spectacular pure-white snowscape.

Enjoy 45 minutes of nonstop, free-for-all fun before changing back into your clothes. The activity wraps up once you receive your photos — the perfect mementos of this enjoyable experience!
