Description

Discover a charming water-bound village that has been home to thousands of people for over 900 years. Get a glimpse into the locals' way of life, explore historic architecture from past dynasties, and even take in your unique surroundings aboard a traditional Chinese boat.

Your half-day adventure begins as you leave the busy city of Shanghai behind for the interconnected waterways and beautiful landscapes of Zhouzhuang. Upon arrival in the village, your guide takes you on a short walk around to see the elegant architecture of the town built during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Pick up some important historical facts as you sight beautifully-designed courtyards and brick archways still used to this day.

Next is a visit to Zhang Hall and Shen Hall, the former private properties of important figures in China's history. Continue on to immerse yourself in the local traditions and culture of Zhouzhuang as you board a boat used by the locals to cruise down the city's snaking canals. See the village's walkways, bridges, and residential houses as your guide explains important details about them. Drive back to Shanghai after a half-day of relaxed sightseeing.

Bruce the guide was good in English and knowledgeable about the area. The trip was short but the area was pretty, although a bit touristy. One thing to mention was the great customer service hotline of Gray Line who assisted me on the day of the trip when I almost couldn't make it to the meeting point. She was very patient and helpful, and gave many useful suggestions.

I had a wonderful time! The tour bus and guide were right on time, and my guide Peter was extremely knowledgeable about both Shanghai and the water village we visited. His english was excellent, and I felt I got to see a very different side of China. Traffic was a bit crazy on the way back (no fault of my guide or driver) but make sure you don't plan two activities back to back, as it is hard to judge the exact time you will return.
