    Before your visit, I’ll ask what you’re most curious about—wood firing, pottery techniques, contemporary artists, galleries, or finding a special piece to take home—and shape the tour around you.

    We’ll explore Imbe, the heart of Bizen ware, one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns. Depending on your interests and the day, we may visit historic kiln sites, Amatsu Shrine, galleries, pottery shops, working kilns, or studios.

    For a deeper experience, visits or hands-on sessions with experienced Bizen potters may also be arranged when available (additional fees may apply).

    Whether you’re completely new to Japanese pottery, a collector, or a ceramic artist yourself, this is a flexible, personal way to go beyond sightseeing and understand Bizen ware more deeply.

During the tour, we’ll visit the Minami Ohgama Kiln Ruins – a historical site where massive climbing kilns once fired hundreds of Bizen ware pieces at a time. Standing at this quiet spot, you'll sense the power and tradition of Japanese pottery craftsmanship passed down through generations.

Amazu Shrine

Amatsu Shrine is a peaceful and historic Shinto shrine nestled in the pottery town of Imbe, Bizen. Revered by local artisans for centuries, it is said that Bizen potters would pray here for successful firings and give thanks to the fire gods. With its mossy steps, stone lanterns, and ancient trees, this quiet spot offers a spiritual glimpse into the heart of traditional Japanese craftsmanship. After visiting the shrine, we’ll stroll through Imbe’s Bizen Pottery Street, where you’ll discover small galleries and shops featuring a variety of unique styles. Okamoto Ceramics Shop

Okamoto Pottery Supply Shop – Where Bizen Artists Gather Visit a local pottery supply shop used by Bizen ceramic artists. This is not a typical tourist spot, but a place where professionals come to source clay, tools, and materials essential to their work. Depending on the day, you may see artists stopping by, preparing for firing, or discussing techniques. It offers a rare glimpse into the behind-the-scenes world of Bizen pottery and the everyday environment that supports its tradition.

Bizen Museum of Art

Most guests choose to explore the Bizen Ware Museum on their own. Admission is not included in the tour price. The museum is pleasantly cool and has a café, making it a perfect place to relax after walking around Bizen. Depending on the timing, you may also have the chance to enjoy matcha served in a Bizen ware tea bowl.

Futaba Shokudo

If you wish, we can stop for lunch at Futaba Shokudo, a very local, casual restaurant in Bizen. Please bring cash, as the restaurant is cash only. There are a few other lunch options in the area, although choices are limited. Lunch is not included in the tour price.
