Panama Pipeline Road (Camino del Oleoducto as in Spanish) is one of the best birding spots in America, rated as one of the most accessible tropical forest in the world exceeding the 400+ species recorded and counting. Being at 45 minutes and early morning ride ride from Panama city will offer a morning to begin searching for forest raptors , canopy birds, toucans, parrots, hummingbirds woodpeckers and with patience, good ears and little luck the guide will locate army ants to find ant swarms specialists : Bicolored, Ocellated and, Spotted Antbirds, Woodcreepers and more.

  • Bring binoculars, scope (optional), field guide, notebook and camera (optional).
  • Light clothing is recommended: cotton shirts or t-shirts - earth colors preferable- long (preferable) and short pants, poncho, hiking shoes, hat, insect repellent and sun block. Dress as for tropical hot humid weather and be ready for rain.

Activity itinerary

6:00 a.m. Pickup time depend on disembarking permitted by the ship 7:00 a.m. First stop in the wetlands before Pipeline 8:00 a.m. At the fragmented forest edges near the entrance to Pipeline Road. 9:45 a.m. Birding the forest along Pipeline Road. 11:30 a.m. Start heading back birding along the way. PS The schedule will flow depending on the interest and pace of participants. We will stop, search, observe, pinpoint and when everyone is ready we continue in search of new birds. Sometimes when need it, we use playback and green laser pointer. OPTIONAL not included in price: The Panamá Rainforest Discovery Center (PRDC). At the Center admire different species of hummingbirds, walk private trails, search the Calamito lake w/"mirador" and great birding.at the top of the tower 40 mts from the ground, with a panoramic view. The best opportunity to search for raptos and for canopy specialties not seen at ground level. Participants must agree for the visit and willing to pay in situs 20usd tiket.
