What you can expect

Venture through the world’s oldest laurel forest in your off-road vehicle, passing coastal villages perched on the cliffs of west Madeira Island. Discover ancient trees, hidden waterfalls, and reach Porto Moniz to swim in the natural saltwater pools.

Wake up at sunrise for a full day of adventure and meet your guide in the lobby of your Funchal hotel. Climb into your off-road vehicle and head towards the heart of the laurel forest, where lush evergreen trees and large flat-leaved bushes cover two-thirds of the island. The mild subtropical climate makes it easy to explore this 40-million-year-old forest, where ancient trees blanket the valleys and waterfalls cascade down the cliffs.

Next, descend the rocky terrain to the coastal villages of Sao Vicente and Seixal, where you can marvel at the beautiful Portuguese architecture. Your professional guide will share stories of the region's history and current efforts to conserve the island's forests and wildlife.

Looking up at the cliffs, keep an eye out for the endangered native Zino’s and Fea’s petrel birds swooping down to hunt and soaring back to their nests to feed their young. After leaving Seixal, head to Porto Moniz for a chance to swim in the natural saltwater pools, formed when lava collided with the Atlantic, before your guide escorts you back to your hotel.
