The aqueduct was built by the Emperor Hadrian [ 3 ] , [ 4 ] , who reigned over the Roman Empire from 117 until his death in 138. From the 13th century , it supplied the city of Tunis . The remains of what could be the original nymphaeum (a small , much more modest basilica -type temple ) were discovered nearby in 2001, while the large temple dates from the Severine period .
