Leave Viti Levu’s beaches behind and venture into the rugged interior of the island on an off-roading excursion across the Nausori Highlands. Traverse the mountainous terrain as you head toward an authentic Fijian village, where you can participate in an ancestral kava ceremony.
Set out in the morning from your hotel for a scenic ride through the jungle and up into the steep topography of the Nausori Highlands. Along the way, pass by cascading waterfalls, sugarcane fields, and sloping valleys. The center of the island is an uneven plateau formed by ancient volcanic activity, with brilliant green moguls and canyons crisscrossing the verdant landscape.
The inhabitants of this remote and sparsely populated locale still adhere to ancient Fijian customs and a more traditional way of life. Visit a Fijian village for a chance to interact with the locals as you're greeted with a kava ceremony. Made from a pounded, peppery root and used in rituals throughout Polynesia, kava is Fiji’s national drink.
You will then be taken on a guided tour of the village, the village school, mingle with the locals and hear old legends and stories of this beautiful, ancient village. This will be the perfect time to take pictures with the locals and the beautifully preserved homes they live in. Lunch is served at the village.
Delve further into the villagers’ customs and culture with an afternoon of activities, or choose to relax and explore on your own before the return drive to your hotel.
