Amsterdam Green Hotel Guide

It's no surprise there are many green hotels in Amsterdam, given this city is known as one of the most sustainable in the world. The Netherlands is also home to miles of bike paths, windmills, and colorful flower fields that are sure to wow any nature lover. After a long day of sightseeing, rest your head on organic cotton sheets at one of the many eco-friendly hotels in Amsterdam.

History & Transportation

Amsterdam's roots date back to the Medieval Age, but it was during its 17th century boom that the city's famous canals were built. This was also the time of Tulipmania, when skyrocketing prices pushed the price of a single bulb to that of an entire estate. Today, only the number of bicycles might outnumber the city's tulips. Cycling is a way of life in the Netherlands; in fact, even King Willem-Alexander rides a bike! There are numerous bike rental shops if you want to see the city like a local, but if biking isn't your thing, or the weather just won't cooperate, there is also an extensive and inexpensive tram system to take you around town.

Things to Do

Stop by the Singel Canal for the Bloemenmarkt, and pick up fresh flowers, including the tulip, the most iconic flower in the Netherlands. Its stalls are on houseboats, making it the only floating flower market in the world. Afterward, head to the hip De Pijp neighborhood for lunch at the Albert Cuyp Market. This huge street market has everything from fish to chocolate to pet supplies. While you are there, try some pickled herring, a local staple. Amsterdammers eat it straight off a plate with pickles and onions, but you can also get it in a sandwich. Don't be afraid to pick up a souvenir at the market.

With the Price Guarantee, Travelocity will refund the difference should you find a lower price. Don't delay! Canals are calling just outside the many sustainable hotels in Amsterdam.
