Marietas Islands

Explore this small group of islands off the eastern coast of Mexico and discover hidden beaches, protected wildlife and spectacular snorkeling.

Venture to the Islas Marietas for picturesque rocky landscapes and unique marine life. Explore the islands by boat and go snorkeling or diving in this protected environment.

Take a guided boat tour of the island and learn the history and myths of this unique group of islands. Formed from volcanic rock, they were used as a site for military bomb testing in the first half of last century. Although the practice is now finished, it left the islands with a series of unique landscapes. Explore tunnels that extend through the island, unusual rock formations and a hidden beach revealed by a giant hole in the rock above.

Islas Marietas was made famous by oceanographer Jacques Cousteau in the 1960s, when he led the campaign to have the bombings stopped. The area is now a protected national park and hosts a wide range of marine life.

Snorkel close to manta rays, octopuses and many species of colorful tropical fish in their natural habitat. You can also scuba dive to the ocean depths and enjoy the coral formations inhabited by sea turtles.

Although you can’t set foot on the island itself, look to the outcrops to see some of the 90 species of protected birdlife that nest there. Capture the grassy landscape of the islands in photographs and enjoy the sight of the soaring blue-footed booby, which is commonly found here.

Islas Marietas is an hour’s boat ride from Puerto Vallarta. Due to its protected status only a small number of tours are allowed near the island, so book well ahead. Kayaks and snorkels are available for rent from Puerto Vallarta and the water around the islands is warm year-round. Most tours take a day and lunch is provided.
