It’s my life’s work to roam the world looking for extraordinary experiences as well as beautiful destinations — and Occidental at Xcaret Destination encompasses both of these. Occidental Xcaret is as unique as its name sounds, and is situated next to the famed Xcaret Park on the Riviera Maya. With direct access to the park, you’ll enjoy the beauty of both properties and their array of ecological and archeological wonders.

The enormous resort offers something for every wanderer, featuring 10 bars, 11 restaurants, 5 pools, and a cove with exclusive access to pristine ocean waters. I could go on for ages, but I’ll share some of the highlights of my journey to Occidental Xcaret.

Gnomes are the outdoorsy type, so it’s no surprise that one of my favorite features of Occidental Xcaret is the wildlife. The resort itself is integrated into the rainforest, and upon entering the property, you’ll immediately be transported. The open-air lobby looks out over lush sky-high trees, and with beautiful guacamayas (macaws) nesting right on the grounds, you have the perfect opportunity for some incredible photos.

My insider tip? Monkeys occasionally visit the resort grounds in the afternoon hours — if you wander wisely, you might just catch them swinging through the trees (or in my case, across the bridge). Just remember to refrain from feeding them, as adorable as they may be.

Another of my favorite features is the salt water pool, which shares the same water as the sea it overlooks. My recommendation? Enjoy the view with an icy cold cocktail from the nearby bar.

Being the adventurous type, I can’t sit still for too long, which is why I laced up my boots and headed out to the Mayan ruins overlooking the ocean. Some say that these particular ruins were once an observatory, and visitors are welcome to see for themselves the incredible view in store.

Speaking of adventure, Xcaret Park is just a trajinera ride away. These colorful boats will sail you off to a day packed with adventure. From archeological explorations to water sports to wildlife adventures, Xcaret Park is every wanderer’s dream. I recommend the Unlimited Xcaret Xperience package, which gives unlimited access to the park to enjoy more than 40 cultural attractions and exhibitions.

As much as Occidental Xcaret packs in adventure for all ages, it also provides one-of-a-kind relaxation and refreshment. After a long day of exploration, you’d be remiss to not take advantage of features like the hydrotherapy pool and state-of-the-art spa and gym. And if you’re like me, you’ll eventually find your way to the white sands of the Cove, Occidental Xcaret’s inlet with exclusive access to the ocean.

As a world traveler and self-proclaimed foodie, I can’t resist highlighting the culinary scene at Occidental Xcaret. From authentic Mexican fare to exotic Mediterranean dishes and everything in between, there’s something to delight even the pickiest of palates. For those looking for an elevated experience, I recommend the Royal Club, which offers access to exclusive fine dining (along with some incredible views).

Occidental at Xcaret Destination earns its reputation as one of Riviera Maya’s most unique getaways. With the perfect balance of adventure, nature, and relaxation, it’s everything a Gnome could hope for. But don’t take my word for it — go see for yourself.
