Hilton Head is well known for being a fantastic beach and golf destination. However, there are many more hidden charms to this hot spot that you may not be aware of. If you’re planning to visit this great destination with your family, be sure to check out some of these lesser-known attractions during your stay!

This is the kind of place where you will never hear the kids utter those dreadful words, “I’m bored.” If you are adventurous and love to try something new, there are plenty of fun things to do during your holiday in Hilton Head. Going horseback riding is a fun and exciting way to see your surroundings, and your kids won’t stop talking about the memory for a long time. A long ride through the lush forests will allow you to see the natural beauty of the Lowcountry from a totally different perspective. Lawton Stables offers guided trail rides through the Sea Pines Forest Preserve for anyone ages 8 and over. If your kids are too young for a trail ride, they can enjoy pony rides or visit the adorable pigs, bunnies and miniature donkeys at the free petting zoo.

A great way to get the entire family active while exploring the island is to rent bicycles. The area features over 25 different bike paths, and many locations offer bike rentals by the day or week. The island is very bicycle- friendly, with most main roads having a bike lane and several well-maintained trails. When you have bikes, you will be able to cover more ground and see more of the island than you would if you were walking – plus you’ll be getting exercise all while enjoying the great outdoors!

What if poor weather is threatening to rain on your parade? Not to worry, you and the little ones will be entertained for hours at The Sandbox, Hilton Head Island’s interactive children’s museum. It is located just off Pope Avenue on the south end of the island and offers interactive exhibits for both children and their parents. There is also a play center designed for younger children ages 8 or under. Your kids will have so much fun there – they won’t even notice that they are learning.

Why not consider taking a bottlenose dolphin tour? Imagine being on a boat, watching the sunlight glint off the bright blue water. Suddenly, a group of quickly moving shapes appears in the distance, leaping out of the water’s surface. You and your family stare in awe as a pod of dolphins swims up next to the boat – a truly magical experience that you will never forget! There are several tours around Hilton Head that will take you to see the bottlenose dolphins – you are virtually guaranteed to spot them on your trip!

As you can see, Hilton Head is not just beaches and golf courses! It offers so many exciting opportunities for family fun that you will struggle to fit in everything that you will want to do. Remember, you can always come back next year for even more fun!
