Craving a spa getaway? Aren’t we all! We’ve partnered with adventure, culture, and luxury traveler Dr. Cacinda Maloney from the blog PointsandTravel, as she reflects on her “not to miss” luxury spa getaways, and let’s just say: She’s been to quite a few!
Spending a day relaxing at a luxury spa is a moment every traveler dreams of relishing during their journeys. I’ve been lucky enough to enjoy treatments at some of the best luxury spas in the world, and I want to share this bliss with you! From the Tuscany region of Italy to the jungles of Malaysia, each experience is completely different and unique in its own way. I recently had a visit to the spa at the Grand Velas Los Cabos, a luxury all-inclusive game changer hotel in Mexico. Another trip to find the greatest spas in the world led me to my own hometown of Scottsdale, Arizona, which happens to lead the country with the highest concentration of resorts and day spas in the United States.
With such a range of spa destinations to choose from across the globe, this list offers a great mix to show you how different and original spa getaways can be. After staying at these luxury spas, and being pampered beyond belief, rest assured that you will return home well rested and completely rejuvenated. You never know where you will come across spas that take luxury to the next level, so let’s take a journey around the world to explore a few of my favorites.
Golden Door, Escondido, California, USA
The Golden Door in Escondido is an icon in the world of luxury spas, having opened in 1958. It is a California wellness retreat that is Japanese-inspired on 600 acres of mountainous terrain near San Diego. This resort is all about you taking the time to focus on your mind, body, and spirit. Enjoy relaxing at your own speed, from daily ensuite massages to 2, 3, and 5-mile morning hikes into the mountains led by guides. Plus, you’ll receive your own personal trainer, yoga, tai chi, water classes, mani’s/pedi’s, facials, and body treatments. The list of possibilities goes on and on. You will not regret a single moment that you spend at the Golden Door.
Bellevue Hotel, Island of Losinj, Croatia
On my very first trip to Croatia, I was smitten with this charming seaside fisherman’s village and its smooth way to treat its luxury clients. I had a chance to experience the spa clinic of the Bellevue Hotel in Cikat Bay, where they promote living in balance. The elegantly designed interior instantly puts you into relax mode as they cater to your every need. They offer everything from facial oxygen treatments and microdermabrasion to body wraps and a variety of massage types, as well as spa programs. They even have a nutritionist and a kinesiologist on staff. Losinj, known as the island of vitality, has been known as a place of wellness since aristocratic nobility came here because of its pristine nature, aromatic plants, and breathable air. The air on the island abounds in sea salt aerosols and contains iodine, potassium chloride, and calcium. Essential oils of locally-grown medicinal plants help to cleanse the lungs for a holistic relaxation experience throughout your entire visit.
Adler Thermae Spa, Tuscany, Italy
The Hotel Adler Spa is a completely different style and type of wellness spa located in the rolling hills of Tuscany, with iconic views of Italian cypress trees. It is surrounded by 50,000 square meters of gorgeous property that is centered around 1,000 square meters of hot springs that have been magically turned into a group of spa houses. There is a quiet section, as well as a central swimming pool section also filled with thermal waters. In the quiet section, there is a traditional Finnish sauna with a cold plunge pool, as well as a crystallized cave steam room, and a spa aqua bedroom overlooking the hot springs. The centralized swimming pool area is where most of the guests hang out after a day of relaxing in the quiet area of the spa. Italians know how to de-stress, and this is the place they leave the city to go for a three, four, or even seven-day getaway in the countryside.
Banjaran Hotspring Resort, Ipoh, Malaysia
Nestled in a lush tropical rainforest of Malaysia, the Banjaran Hotsprings Resort is a 16-acre hot springs resort. It is a hidden sanctuary with geothermal hot springs, cascading waterfalls, and natural caves in 260-million-year-old limestone hills. It has 25 luxury water villas that are surrounded by tranquil waters, with each having its own plunge pool in the living room and hot springs-filled jacuzzi and shower in the outdoor bathroom. If that isn’t awesome enough, the highlight of this resort is its natural geothermal dipping pools, steam caves, ice baths, meditation caves, and cave waterfalls as well as its very own “Doctor Fish Pool” for exfoliation of the feet! More than 40 different Asian and holistic treatments are available in the spa treatment rooms.
Grand Velas Spa Los Cabos, Mexico
I experienced a renewed sense of clarity and revitalization in my body and soul at the massive hydrotherapy spa area of Mexico’s Grand Velas Los Cabos. The water journey consists of a seven-step experience from every type of jacuzzi, sauna, steam room, ice room, clay room, and polar pools imaginable. The variety and types of hydrotherapy they offer are amazing. I felt reinvigorated the moment I entered this water wonderland, which incorporates the desert landscape with local healing elements found locally in nature. I chose the signature Blue Agave massage body treatment. Pure pampering begins the moment you walk into this Mexican magical luxury spa.
Spa House at Sanctuary Camelback, Scottsdale, Arizona USA
The Spa House is a new concept of “spa getaways” in sunny Scottsdale, Arizona. This is where the luxury crowd demands even more from their spa experiences. The Spa House was created as a private enclave within the Sanctuary Camelback Mountain Resort. It is a 3,500-square-foot, luxurious four-bedroom home with four casitas that are within the property itself. It is perfect for a wedding party who want to stay together in the main house, plus additional couples nearby in the casita. It is also great for family gatherings or girlfriend getaways. Some of the distinctive features of the Spa House is a movement studio with fitness equipment, a spa treatment room, and outdoor fire bowls. It has a full kitchen and dining room, as well as, its own pool and wrap-around outdoor patio. The casitas down below the Spa House are 875-square- foot suites. They are wonderfully furnished with a living room and an outdoor shower, as well as gas fireplaces. They have stunning views of Camelback Mountain! Staying in the Spa House includes all the amenities of guests that stay at the Sanctuary Camelback Mountain Resort.
So there you have it, my top six luxury spa getaways not to miss! Which one will you indulge at next?
