Eric Stoen of Travel Babbo has traveled to more than 450 cities in 84 countries (at last count). We asked him which ten bucket list cities everyone should travel to in their lifetime. Here are his picks for crafting your perfect city-centric bucket list.
Creating a bucket list is tricky! The world is full of amazing cities, and of course you may still be holding off on international travel. It would be easy to put together a list of unique cities that are off the beaten path, or a list of the coolest small towns, or up-and-coming destinations. But for this list I returned to the basics: what are the top ten cities that everyone should see, even if the destinations are already heavily touristed? Here are my ten. Discussion is welcome! And I’m well aware that there are no African or South American cities on my list. A few cities on both continents barely missed the cut.

Florence, Italy
Florence is the birthplace of the Renaissance and has the art and architecture to prove it, but beyond that it maintains a large European city feel on a small walkable scale. Don’t judge the city by the daytime crowds of tour groups and cruise ship passengers. Stay in the city center for a few days, walk around early in the morning and late in the evening, and you’ll feel the history.

Istanbul, Turkey
There are countless reasons to visit Istanbul: the hills; the Bosphorus; the Blue Mosque; Hagia Sofia; the Grand Bazaar; its amazing history and importance on the Silk Road. It’s Asian and European, secular and devout. And everything comes together magnificently.

Tokyo, Japan
Visit Tokyo for the skyscrapers, the arcades, the anime, the iconic Park Hyatt Tokyo, and the amazingly hectic pace of the city, but head to the gardens, temples, and parks as well to see Tokyo’s more relaxed side.

Paris, France
Paris is the third most visited city in the world, after Bangkok and London. Some go for the food. Some for the museums. Some to take a selfie in front of the Eiffel Tower. We love it for the neighborhoods, the parks, and the frequent picnics.

Nothing beats a sunset picnic at Champ de Mars park
Venice, Italy
Venice is magical. Dive in. Get lost. Think about everyone else who has walked the same paths and sailed the same canals for more than 1,500 years. And do it soon, before sea levels rise further.

Venice
Hong Kong, China
I almost included Beijing instead, but Hong Kong is easier to visit (no visa required), and is more compact and easier to explore. We love hiking on Lantau Island, watching the city light up at night from Victoria Peak, smelling the incense in the temples, and taking in both sides of the city from the Star Ferry – still the best $0.25 you can spend anywhere.

Hong Kong’s Man Mo Temple
Varanasi, India
There are several Indian cities I could have included on this list, but I gave the nod to sacred Varanasi on the banks of the Ganges, where life and death coexist.

Morning along the Ganges in Varanasi
New York, New York
From morning to night, New York City has an energy unlike anywhere else on the planet. Visit Central Park, head to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, eat a hot dog from a street cart, dine at a Michelin-starred restaurant, look out over the Statue of Liberty, and see a Broadway show … all in the same day.

The Oculus – New York City’s transportation hub at the World Trade Center
Jerusalem, Israel
One of the oldest cities in the world, Jerusalem is key to Islam, Judaism, and Christianity. In entering the Old City, you leave behind the 21st century, and when you walk from the Jewish quarter to the Muslim quarter, you may as well be traveling to another country. Utterly fascinating to visit and experience, regardless of your religious beliefs.

In Jerusalem’s Old City
Sydney, Australia
Australia is the number one dream destination of Americans. Stop dreaming and go! Sydney has iconic landmarks, amazing beaches, and one of the highest quality of life rankings on the planet.

Bangkok should be in any travellers’ list for a variety of reasons: people, culture, food, sights,
shopping…and the reasons are as varied and endless.
Agreed
Right on with Florence! I lived there 3 months and always felt I was in a Renaissance Fantasy world. The city vibe resonates “Renaissance era” – with an historic statue, ancient piazza, and every nick and cranny oozing storied history. Few travelers stay long enough to experience Florence beyond the world-renown museums – I recommend staying at least a couple days longer – they won’t be disappointed. Apparently, even Italian gelato was born in Florence!
I couldn’t agree more. You need to get up and walk the street before the tour buses arrive, too. You get the feeling of actually living in the 16th C. I lived in a hill town nearby for two months a couple of years ago, it was amazing to live the Italian lifestyle in Italian time. You can give yourself over to walking back streets and discovering small treasures in tiny spaces.
I read that the woman who wrote the book “1000 places to visit…” would go to Florence on her last trip.
I have no idea how New York, New York made this list. The most godawful city I have ever visitd.
Asley Warren: You went all the way there and had a bad time? Either you had very bad travel guides or you are the sort of person who would have a bad time anywhere. I feel sorry for you,
My ancestors are from nearby Pistoia and I plan on spending at least a month exploring Tuscany, especially Florence (and Lucca). A few days with a tour group is simply not enough.
I live I Livorno for 3 years, at least once a month we would take the train to Florence. We would go watch Rugby at the stadium or to The Fiddlers Elbow to watch the Six Nations matches. I have several friends from Florence it was nice to have personal tour guides for the low cost of a beer and a Porkette sandwich at the Central Market.
I absolutely agree. I just spent two weeks there. It was my third visit, and it won’t be my last. Staying longer gives you time to enjoy just being there. You can time your time and just stroll around and absorb all that makes the city fabulous.
San Francisco should be on this list
Going on a cruise in June Florence is on the list for excursion
I went to a medical conference but had extra time afterwards so I booked a 6-hour cooking class. It was awesome!
(Barcelona, Cusco, and Mexico City are genuine contenders.
most definitley agree on all three!
i most definitely agree on all three!
Nothing in Sapin?
How about a small city with beautiful architecture, Guanajuato, Mexico
We just got back from Florence and we are head over heels in love with everything about it.
What would you remove?
Rio belongs on the list too
New York no longer belongs on this list. Current events would displace many of these formerly frat destinations.
I agree. Florence is okay, but after you’ve seen David and Venus there’s other places more exciting. Like Bangkok! Or Siem Reep, or Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City). Luang Prabang. The author seems very Eurocentric.
Venus? Isn’t that in Paris?
Sorry, you must’ve meant the Birth of Venus
Bangkok, definitely belongs.
Dubai, Montreal, Vancouver, Madrid, Rome!!!!
Definitely Rome. Probably Beijing, Mexico City. Maybe Barcelona, London
Cusco (Peru), without a doubt!
Very difficult to narrow to ten cities. Many things enter into it , interest in history , architecture, natural formations, religion, etc. the more you travel, the more favorites you will have. But where you will go back to helps put a city at the top
Your can swap out stinky, dying Venice for any of those.
Mexico City is pretty dangerous, specially after the sun goes down.
People who have only read and heard about Mexico City would be in awe of the wonders in the city and surroundings,
I would have liked to see London and Valencia on the list (my wife and I enjoyed Valencia a lot more than Barcelona).
There’s no way to limit the worlds must visit cities to a list of 10
Definitely Mexico City!
Dubai ??? Lol
Dubai? Just fancy hotels in the desert and Lebanese food for culture? What’s original or historical? Las Vegas of the Middle East. I think I’d prefer Oman.
Dubai had a great time, Paired with Abu Dhadi is a winner vacation!
Been to 8 of them but I would add: Hallstatt, Austria; Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber, Germany and Bruges, Belgium.
San Francisco
Belongs too.
Every where you go in Rome, the city breathes and exudes its great history. The numerous amazing operas of Michelangelo and Bernini and other artists such as the Trevi fountain , the Sistine chapel and Saint Peter Cathedral are living witnesses of the miracle of the Renaissance.
The most beautiful city in the world has been left out of the top 10.
Rio de Janeiro, Lima, Peru, Rikavik, Iceland, St Petersburg, Russia
Definitely Las Vegas!
Athens, Greece!
Rome, Barcelona, Capetown.
Cape Town, one of the most beautiful in the world. New Orleans—unique city, culture, food fabulous, world-class street musicians, fascinating architecture.
San Francisco, the city of microclimates and the marvelous painted ladies.
Dubai sucks. No real culture or history, artificial Disney in the Desert for uber rich.
Some great restaurants tho
Brugge Belgium is amazing
I agree! And how can anyone leave out Rio de Janeiro and include Varanasi!
AMSTERDAM
Rome,Paris,Munich,Most of Europe,Hawaii Greece.
Sorry. Not Dubai. I’d rather even Vegas if you want a fake city. At least you can drink and party.
Krakow & Prague
Montreal is such a beautiful, vibrant city. Definitely a must-visit!
Montreal and Quebec City from May to September are among the very best North American cities: compact, full of energy and joie de vivre.
Dubai
I’ve been to most of these. Yes, Bangkok #1
Just returned from BKK. Loved it. People food and its much less expensive than Hong Kong
I’m heading to Dubai in two weeks. Can’t wait!!!!
What about..London????
there are so many beautiful cities.. Bruges Belgium, Dasńk Poland, Tallin Estonia, definetely a must see
Yes, Bruges for sure! Also, I don’t know Dasnk, Poland, but Cracow, Warsaw, and Wroclaw are all wonderful!
I myself if I ever cross the Atlantic is to go to Athens, Crete, Capri n maybe Iceland.
Budapest is Magical!
Yes Gdansk!!!!
I’ve been to most of these. Yes, Bangkok #1
What do you take off?
Agree…Bangkok
Dubai may not belong, but I’ve never been there, but no London, or Shanghai (over Beijing, in my books), and Rome, over Venice; perhaps Osaka or Nagoya over Tokyo? It’s impossible to properly decide or comment without a set of agreed-upon criteria!
Dubai!
Bora Bora, Tahiti. The loving people, beautiful palm trees and crystal clear water in lagoons. ?
I checked off one more city on my “bucket list”, by visiting the tallest skyscraper in the world, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. Pretty exhilarating!
I was just there three weeks ago for a work event. Unfortunately I only got out of the venue for a total of 2.5 hours over 7 full days.
But we’re having the conference at the same venue next year… so hopefully
Try to go early so you can see the sights!
Bangkok, Bali, Budapest … and Prague.
Bali? Wasn’t overly impressed… and it’s basically a country… do you mean Denpasar? Because that’s a hard ‘pass’ too.
Denpasar belongs on a list of 10 cities you should not visit… transport?… and Bali is the “worst” bit of Indonesia.
Ben there … lovely if you are willing to open your eyes to a new way of life. Ubud. Is also lovely and the rice fields are amazing. Again it is not clean if coming from the USA but the food, peacefulness, and adventure is worth all the fresh local food and the higher end restaurants.
Forget Bali. It used to be a paradise but, alas, no more. On the other hand, Bandung is pretty interesting and if you still want a little paradise, visit the Gillies Aire, off the Island of Lombok.
Tell me why. I’m considering going there.
Ruth, Bali is still an incredibly beautiful place. Just give Kuta and the other southern tourist areas a big miss. Ubud is heavily touristed but is the cultural heart of Bali – don’t miss it. Also, the northeast beaches are lovely and not as visited. Have a wonderful time!
I visited Amed on the east coast and fell in love with the people. I spent a week there and it will always have a place in my heart. I went back 3 years later and the people still remembered my name. They shared their religion and culture with me in a way thought introduced peace and grace into my life. I also visited Uluwatu in the south and saw beautiful beaches without all of the bad things I had heard about Kuta.
So many wonderful places in this
World! Wish I could see them
All!
It’s neither a country nor a city, it’s an island in the country of Indonesia. I agree though, unimpressed, I prefer Sumatra.
Tokyo? It’s just a another version of NY, NY with New York perfect on the list of top 10
Bali is an island in Indonesia.
Bali is not a country.
The list should add another 50 places. How to choose? The world is an amazing place
On this Bali thread, having lived for 2 years around Indonesia, the country doesn’t really fit well in “top cities”. If I had to pick an Indonesian city, it would be Bandung, in the highlands of West Java. But the best of Indonesia (including Bali) is off the beaten track, in the rural areas. Heartbeat of Bali is in small villages. Get out of the beach towns and even Ubud.
Budapest yes!!!!! Was just there for 4 days this week. Incredible city.l
Not having St. Petersburg on the list makes the list totally meaningless!
Bali is an island of Indonesia, not a country. Unique culture, great food, great people and sights
Budapest definitely!
Bangkok!!!
Bali is a province of Indonesia. The island is gorgeous as are the people, but it’s best to get out of the tourist area. The island is larger than some think. Other options in the area are Lembongan, Lombok, or the Gilis (there are three of them). But none of these are cities.
Heading there in July. Can’t wait.
The nice hotels are on a peninsula away from town. Don’t eat, drink water or ice outside of the peninsula. A guide must take you everywhere and traffic is horrendous. Nice people, beautiful temples, eat lunch at the buffet overlooking the volcano. Enjoy.
Bali is not a city, besides that fact, I wasn’t rally impressed by Bali!
I had a genuine spiritual experience in Bali. It may not be New York but the people are exceptional.
Genova, must see city. Venice and Firenze are nice but too crowded. Try Genova you will love it.
Genova is always my “home base” in Italy. They’ve been slow to evolve into a tourist destination and it’s worked out great!! Truly Italian without the crowds.
Absolutely agree on Budapest and Prague!
Prague is well worth the experience. Walking over the bridge was magical!
What would you take off to add the cities you are suggesting?
All of already, some more than once, others just once
http://www.instagram.com/unviajerosinmaleta
Oh, Prague! My favorite! Absolutely magnificent!!!
Bangkok and Prague are a must!!
Definitely Bangkok, Prague, Budapest AND Scranton!
Wow… done 8 cities.
Definitely Budapest and Prague
Budapest and Prague, definitely! Both are way nicer than Paris, which used to be nice but is now a sh*thole.
I agree! Budapest and Prague should be on the list! I would also add Barcelona!!!
PNH over BKK I’ve seen both at least a half dozen times. Bali is paradise lost, including Ubud, and Prague is not that wonderful anymore.
Mexico City- the art, the food, the culture! And it’s safer than its reputation makes it out to be.
Absolutely Vic; How can you overlook a city of 20 million? I have traveled there many times w/ my son who is a Spanish teacher in Austin, Texas.Never had any problems, just be aware of your surroundings as you should do in N.Y. or any other large city.
I’m there now, for the second time in two years, and couldn’t agree more. World class city with amazing food, art, museums, parks, and beautiful walkable neighborhoods. A must-do.
I was fotunate to visit 9 of the 10 cities on the list. Have not been to India. I would add Bangkok . No list is complete without London.
Lois Smalley
I agree that Mexico City should be on your list. The historic center is a cultural gem and at the Plaza de Tres Culturas you can see architecture from 3 distinct times periods in one location.
I’d say Chiangmai over Bangkok but at least you mentioned Thailand
Agreed. Just got back about a week ago.
Definitely Chiangmai over Bangkok.
Agreed, and not only because my son and grandchildren live there!
I completely agree! Was there 3 weeks ago and would go back over the crowded tourist areas.
Agree. Lived in TH for 17yrs, just returned to CA
Agree 100%
Yay me I’ve been in all of them and I also took children and grand children to some of them.
I would also add Barcelona, Madrid, Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, and the fabulous Mexico City!
Hi Ana, I want to take my 10 year old grand daughters on a great vacation—where would you suggest?
There are so many wonderful places. If she is ten let her help with planning. I lived overseas with my kids until they were 7&10. Does she like nature, adventure, history, archeology, crowds, cities or smaller places? Options are endless. Base it on activities or culture she is interested in.
I wouldn’t go to Buenos Aires. Been there about five years ago and the infrastructure is in sad need of repair. People great. Food wonderful. Economy very shaky. Wait for them. Take your kiddos to London, Paris (we took our oldest grandson to London, Paris), Barcelona, Tokyo (a lot of kids are into anime). In London we did Windsor, the Eye, Harry Potter World and visited family. In Paris he wanted The Mona Lisa, Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame. Free time is a must and introducing different food, roaming around, building looking and people watching. Plan to take all the grands on trips. Did it with their parents (London, New Zealand, Rome and New Zealand).
Take them to ITALY, it is stunning, an open museum everywhere you look. Start in Venice, then rent a car and drive south all the way to Rome. Take your time, at least 1 or 2full days, to go through each of these cities, Padova, Verona, Bologna, FLORENCE, detour to Pisa, back to the middle, Siena, — and then a full week in Rome (if you want to know and understand that city well, so much to see and soak there) If you still have time on your hands also visit quaint Cinque Terre as well.
Anywhere in Italy. From the border with Austria in the Dolomites where you can ride your bikes into Austria, to Verona, Cinque Terre, Florence, Assisi, Rome and Matera in the south.
We just returned from a 17 day trip w/ my 10yr old twin daughters. We saw London, Paris, Genoa, Rome, and Barcelona. When asked what they liked best, one said Paris and the other Barcelona.
Agree in all your choices.
I just don’t know how the articles list excludes Athens Greece? Birthplace of western civilization
I concur with your addition suggestions. I’d also suggest these Spanish cities: Segovia, Seville, Toledo, Grenada, Santiago de Compostela, Palma Mallorca. Also like to mention Malta.
Also Girona
Excellent passage into a past city of stone
Buenos Aries? Really? Why ?
Rio de Janeiro is beautiful, esp Ipanema. Yes, know the area…. just a short distance are the poorest section, the favelas.
In my opinion, Hanoi is the best street food scene and who doesn’t like to play in traffic?
Kyiv should be there too
Agreed
Barcelona, St Petersburg, and Mexico City, all of which are absolutely fabulous, significant, and unique, should be on this list. Sydney should be dropped from it! It’s very scenic and pleasant but many cities are, and Sydney has no history or uniqueness to speak of. I would also drop Florence, Paris, and Venice too— NOT that they don’t richly deserve to be on the list! But they are all over their carrying capacity for tourists as it is!!! This list will only make that worse. It’s hard to capture the magic that you came for when you are jammed shoulder to shoulder with millions of other tourists. Poor Venice will soon sink beneath the waves from the weight of tourists alone…..
Florence in January was not too crowded or too cold. Paris in October was very pleasant and not crowded.
Beirut, Byblos, Prague, Budapest….stop listing the same ones over and over…travel and explore the real deal!! Skip Florence…overdone. skip NY.
How can you say skip a city? Overdone how? By whom? What is the real deal? What qualifies Florence and NY to be skipped? This is a very personal preference, so if you have input that you feel would be valuable to someone who has not traveled to the two aforementioned cities, I encourage you to share. Florence and NY are two of my family’s favorite cities. Our reasons for loving them are that they both have great history as well as beautiful art, culture, and architecture.
Totally agree that Barcelona with St. Petersburg. They are on my list but so is Venice.
Kind of like how it is walking over the Charles Bridge along with the thousands of other tourists and the souvenir hawkers. Go to Budapest instead.
I agree, Wendy. What makes a city unique is the native population…you’ll be hard pressed to have meaningful connections with Romans in Rome, Venetians in Venice, and Florentines in Florence. Most of them avoid the city centers whenever possible because of the crush of the tourism machine. There is one Italian city that seems to never make anyone’s “bucket list” and that hasn’t had the tourist economy price residents out of their own neighborhoods quite yet, and that has been around longer than Rome, Florence, or Venice: Naples.
Matera and Alberobello in Southern Italy are interesting with few tourists.
Naples has the best pizza I’ve ever had, in the world. The gatherings of young people in the streets at night is very interesting. It is a short ride to Pompei from there, too- fascinating!
Great suggestions
Agree, BKK is amazing.
TOTALLY AGREE!
Portland
Maine, of course….Portland, Maine
I agree. Bangkok.
Yes its one of beautiful city’s in the world and they are not racist against people of color.
Was just in Bangkok for the 10th time. It’s Over for that city. Hanoi & Havana should Definitely be on list… possibly Buenos Aries
I personally liked Chiang Mai and Phuket better than Bangkok, but maybe cause I’m from a big city. Where’s Amsterdam? Or somewhere in Spain?
Phuket! You’re right!
Been to almost 40 countries. Bangkok was mediocre. Heck, Phuket had more personality.
Absolutely .. take Jerusalem off .. 1/2 day trip at best
Yes, with a side trip to Chianti’s Mai.
We are world travellers and have been to them all. Great picks! However, no list could be complete, in my opinion, without London and Prague.
And the girls may have a little surprise for you!
Bangkok is dirty. Polluted. Hot and humid. I lived in Singapore but travelled to the city often. My favorite city is Hanoi to which I traveled often. For travellers to Bangkok do try to explore other areas of Thailand.
Went to Thailand and it was magnificent. A place to see, shop, do, and eat. Food delicious!! Shopping phenomenal !!
BBeen to all except Jerusalem.
Go as soon as you can! Jerusalem us fascinating! All of Israel is!
Mexico city is the city of the palaces, and there is not city in the world with more museums than Mexico city. Not to mention that Mexican food is considered by UNESCO a human heritage. Mexico city is a must for any traveler…
Been in Florence, Venice, and Paris.
Kyoto, Japan is not to be missed.
Lisbon Portugal should be on this list
I much prefer Hanoi.
Kyoto over Tokyo
Lisbon
Samarkand
Petra over Jerusalem
Yes to Istanbul,Florence,Venice, Paris
Fort Wayne
Jerusalem, belongs to Palestine not Israel.
Let me know when you buy something there with Palestinian currency.
Istanbul is really Constantinople, and it’s part of the Holy Roman Empire. So what’s your point?
I’ve visited 7places out of 10 each Summer year. I enjoyed most is Paris, ?? Italy
Paris. Get in see Eiffel Tower and get out.
What do you take off?
What do you take off?u
Definitely agree ,I love Bangkok can’t wait to go back
Pentwater
Washington DC. The most magnificent, uncluttered and green capital in the world. Home to museums, galleries, walking paths, theatre, great food, and diversity.
Have visited 5 if these places
I couldn’t agree more. Loved vibrancy, restaurants, and sights of Bangkok. Traffic is a sight to behold, beautiful parks, and the Sky Train which goes around the entire city. Definitely put on your list!
australia a number one dream destination..? i don’t THiNK so
otherwise agree with the list especially Istanbul.
i guess if you’re leaving Bangkok off i
I’d add Barcelona- it has stunning architecture, fabulous food and markets, a beach but primarily Gaudi everywhere in houses, parks and museums.
I agree completely. Bangkok is the only city in the world I actually miss. The people are so cool and so American in so many ways. We would move there at least part-time if we could buy a house. I have no use for condos.
Prague, St Petersburg
Agreed
Agreed.
Totally agree about Praha.
Agreed.
Prague definitely
Chicago? London?
Chicago? Really? Why?
I would guess the architecture, museums, art, extensive public parks, lakeshore, dining, etc. But maybe not when compared to all the others.
But I would also say Barcelona is an absolute must. I was very disappointed in Florence – drop that, replace with London, St Petersburg. Maybe the list just needs to be larger.
Tokyo? And not Kyoto???
Have been to all 10. It’s a good list that represents many cultures…all interesting and unique in their own way!
Prague should be on this list!
Agreed.
I would also add San Francisco and Edinburgh.
Definitely San Francisco should be on the list!
I would add Moscow, too.
Definitely San Francisco! I would also add Fez!
Have been to many of the ten (lived in NYC for five years; been to Jerusalem around 20 times;been to Paris three times; spent a week in Benares;and spent a week in Istanbul, and found all of them fascinating. That said San Francisco is among the most beautiful and fez the most fascinating.
Like many, I would add Prague. Also Budapest. London as well!
As for my 10 Bucket List places:
1 & 2: Auckland and Christchurch.
3. Bhutan
4. Cape town
5. Phnom Penh
6. Vancouver
7. Sanaa (if anything is left standing after the miserable war)
8. Wye in Wales
9. Lisbon
10. Copenhagen (where I’ve been twice but for business and thus only caught glimpses of what looked like a fascinating cuty).
Yes, the old City of Sana’a is incredible. You’ll feel like you’ve gone back in time 500 years.
Wye in Wales is beautiful and peaceful. Layers of history with loads of hiking, outdoor activities. Residents are beyond friendly. If you want lush green and the ability to see the sheep named Scott, whose wool your gloves came from, this is your type of place. The abbey and castle are bonuses. I left my heart there.
San Francisco. Ugh. Not what it used to be since the tech take-over. I have lived here for 35 years. The magic is gone. The homeless on the streets are sad and might be intimidating to tourists. The city is way too expensive and very dirty. Same your money. Consider elsewhere down or up the coast.
No cities from the entire African continent made the list??
South America got left out too. This list blows.
Buenos Aires????
I absolutely loved everything about
Buenos Aires. Would love to go back!
Santiago, Chile should have made the list.
Santiago is the most soulless city in all of South America
Yerevan, Armenia. Gorgeous setting, in view of Mount Ararat; great outdoor spaces (parks, cafes, memorials and momuments); cultural treasures (museums, churches); hospitable people. Plus, it’s very safe and extremely affordable.
I would include Bogota, Cape Town, Rio de Janeiro, and Mumbai
Cartagena Columbia
Absolutely…its a colonial gem….great food…..tropical islands minutes away and vibrant culture
Cartagena de Indias surpasses all of the above. A must see Unesco World Heritage site on Colombia’s Caribbean costa. Also safe.
Cairo should be on the list.
Cairo/ Giza should definitely be on this list. Some of the oldest history of the world is here. WTH?
Marrakesh.
It was a toss up for me between Marrakech and Fez so I’d just say but both on there.
Love Marrakech & Fez,
each town has their own beauty, Fez is more authentic in my opinion, I found the Moroccans to be the nicest & kindest people I have ever met in my travels, they are so welcoming!
Absolutely agree. Marrakech needs to be on the list
Neither Africa nor the Middle East, Cairo with the pyramids is left out!
Jerusalem is in the Middle East and on the list.
Ha!
100% Cape Town should be on there. I have been to many amazing cities and Cape Town is up there.
Cape Town, seriously amazing city.
Definitely South Africa should be on the list. Fabulous country!
Cape Town, Knysna, Durban South Africa also should be on the list! Rio De Janero , Brazil! Berlin, Germany!
Cape Town, Rio, Vancouver, Lisbon, London would be my next five….
Agree. Would also add Porto.
I have also been to Vancouver and London which are truly are amazing.
Portland, Oregon
Jerusalem , Israel
By far the most interesting city
Old and new at same time ,,full of history , great whether great food and great people
Recommend !!!!
London, yes!
Rome, Madrid, Barcelona,London, San Francisco, New Orleans,
Berlin, Vienna, Boedapest, Sevilla … where are they ?
And Brussels, Bruges, Ghent, Antwerp ?
Paris is a waste (Lyon, Nice for France).. and as a New Yorker I say skip it too… Bangkok, Prague, Marrakech, Mumbai, Delhi, Ljubljana, Edinburgh, Singapore far more interesting..
Opinions are subjective. Singapore was one of the most uninteresting cities I’ve ever been stuck in. Just spent a neverending seven days there and it’s one the few times I’ve ever been ready to leave somewhere after two days. Paris is by far my favorite city in the world. Bangkok, Prague and Edinburgh are great in their own ways but not top ten.
See, and I absolutely love Singapore! It is subjective!
Singapore bored the hell out of me and I left after two days. You are right. It is subjective.
I agree. I lived in Singapore for two years and loved it. A beautiful, clean city where numerous cultures exist together. Did you know there are 4 official languages? And we never worried about going out at night and com8ng home late by taxi or MRT. CJ
Singapore reminded me of Orlando, Florida. Not sure why? But it did.
I have to agree Forrest. I was done with Singabore after two days, and while the food is good, it’s an incredibly boring city. Paris and Hong Kong are two of my favorite cities, and I agree that hanging out in the various neighborhoods of Paris is the highlight.
To consider Paris a waste, what on earth did you do there? I loved Paris!
J’aime Paris
I don’t know that I’d call it a “waste,” but it WAS a disappointment. I kept expecting to fall in love with it and I never did. Maybe if my French had been better, or if it hadn’t rained the whole time…
I’ve been to Paris ten times. Meh. Not sure why but it leaves me cold every time. I meat, it’s nice, and I can do some shopping and eat well. But I would take just about any other European city (and I’ve been to many of them) over Paris any day.
I agree. Been to Paris a half dozen times, I speak French yet it just doesn’t do it for me. Dublin should be on this list!
I couldn’t agree more regarding Paris. Very overrated compared to so many other places. The people there are not pleasant and I am part French!
Agreed! Paris is definitely overrated. The smaller towns and rural areas of Europe are the best.
Prague is at the top of my bucket list.
Florence is one of my favorite places. And Rome shouldn’t be missed.
Rain the whole time definitely could have “dampened” your enthusiasm. Give Paris another chance! When I am not there, I find myself dreaming of my next visit.
Paris a waste? Come on. The history, architecture, food and cafe life. The Atelier des Lumierre itself is worth the trip.
I’m in Paris now and loving it- definitely belongs on the list!
The only two I really agree with are Venice and Hong Kong. I would add Rome, Bruges, London, Marrakech, Prague, Dubai, Kyoto, and….OK, for the last I’m stuck between Cape Town, Vancouver, Amsterdam, and Bangkok. But anyone who puts Tokyo above Kyoto hasn’t been to either. 🙂
the three B’s Barcelona,Berlin,Buenos Aires
And Brussels and Bruges and Boedapest but not Boekarest.
Varanasi??
Ahead of Buenos Aires? Rome? Rio? Barcelona? Amsterdam? London?
Yes. Because it’s life changing for so many. Even non believers
Been to 7 of the ten. It’s a good selection. I’d add Rome, London and San Francisco.
Thank you for mentioning San Francisco. As a native I was feeling a bit slighted!
Sanfrancisco is one of the most delightful cities I have visited. I like Oslo too. . . . It is beautiful. The museums are fascinating. . . .the Viking museum, the Kontiki museum, the Munch museum. . . .
The most amazing thing in Oslo is the Vigeland park.
Isfahan, Iran
I agree with Isfahan ❤️
Ditto on Isfahan
London, Paris, Florence, Istanbul, Rio, Mexico City, New York, Barcelona, Dubai, Tokio
Cairo, Cape Town, Berlin, Vienna
Kathmandu!
Absolutely.
I’ve been to most of them. But, I don’t get why Venice and Florence are included instead of Rome. Venice felt like a tourist trap and Florence is so small and crammed all the time. There is nothing to see other than the museums for which you have to stand on long long lines and it is ridiculously expensive. Rome at the other hand offers a balance of history, art, architecture and culture. Weather is great too. It is easily the third must see cities in Europe after Paris and London. I didn’t like Amsterdam, got bored after just one day. There are more to see and do in smaller cities like Madrid, Barcelona, Prague and Budapest. Spain has the greatest weather in all Europe in late Spring or early summer. It is unbelievably pleasant there if you like to walk around. Cairo should be included. It is an unbelievable feeling to look at structures built by men 5000 years ago. Looking at pyramid pictures don’t do justice. You can’t feel how big and magnificent it is looking at the pictures. A trip to Egypt gives a different perspective to everything you know about history and architecture. Only downside is food sucks in Egypt. After 5000 years of trying, they still haven’t figured out how to cook or run a restaurant. Istanbul is a must as well.
I agree totally on Cairo. Magnificent pyramids and museum but Breakfast was all I could stomach.
FLORENCE, ITALY — Turdi, you have got to be kidding(!) when you say that all there is in Florence are museums with long lines. You must have been on a sub-standard tour, or else you didn’t have a good tour book or choose to spend enough time there. Here are some of the things I loved about Florence:
* Architecture, both Gothic and Renaissance
* Ponte Vecchio (Old Bridge) over the Arno River — Gold jewelry shops
* Important people in History: Cosimo de Medici, Lorenzo de Medici, Dante, Machiavelli, Fra’ Savanarola
* Piazza Republica, Piazza Signoria, Piazzale Michelangelo
* Churches with frescoes by Giotto, sculptures by Michelangelo
* 19th century painted facades at Santa Croce, Santa Maria Novella, and the Duomo
* Giotto’s Campanile (Bell Tower), Ghiberti’s bronze Baptistry doors, Brunelleschi’s Dome
* Boboli Gardens
* Palazzo Vecchio and Loggia dei Lanzi
* Church cloisters (beautiful and peaceful)
* Mercato Centrale, Mercato del Porcellino (aka ‘Straw Market’), Mercato Sant’Ambrogio
* Tombs of Michelngelo, Machiavelli, and Galileo at Santa Croce
* Donatello’s David at Bargello Museum, Michelangelo’s David at L’Academia
* Oltrarno (south bank of the Arno)–trendy restaurants, craft workshops, church of Santo Spirito, Pitti Palace, Belvedere, San Miniato
* Convent of San Marco — Many frescoes by Fra’Angelico
* Shopping for leather goods, jewelry, fashion, ceramics
Yes, Florence is small compared to Rome, but that’s what makes the Centro Citta so appealing. Like the historic part of Prague, it is a ‘walkable’ city with glorious sculptures, architectural details and wonderful sights and sounds around every corner.
* City bus (short ride) to hill town of Fiesole, views of Florence, olive groves, Etruscan antiquities
* Food tours and Tuscan cooking classes
I agree. Florence sticks in my head. Will always be at the top of my list. Not sure why Paris is the city of love. All the buildings look the same and I found it boring. Was there between the two bombings. Guards with big guns everywhere.
Buenos Aires, beautiful city, wonderful people, delicious food, if I ever move from America, it will be to Argentina!
Agree, I was going to make the same suggestion. Love BA!
Where’s Albuquerque?
In New Mexico.?
By continent
NA- San Francisco
SA- Buenos Aires
Europe- Paris, Prague, London and Dublin. (Barcelona, Rome Florence soon)
Asia- Hong Kong, Shanghai (Mumbai and Jerusalem I will find you!)
Africa- never been, but Casablanca, Cairo and Cape Town
Australia- never been, but Sydney.
Antarctica- Ice Station Zebra?
Instead of Casablanca try Marrakech or Fes
Absolutely!
Antarctica – Ukrainian Research Station. Has the Southernmost bar in the world (built when it was still a British Station).
And boy do they celebrate New Year’s! 🙂
That’s the place where the wall behind the bar is covered with bras, right? Long winter down there but they do serve a great vodka
I thought that Samarkand was pretty amazing.
Yes! a little known Jewel .
Cuzco is another South American must. Also: Antigua in Guatemala.
The Hong Kong temple pictured here is the Man Po not Man Mo. Mexico City, Bangkok, London.
I visited half places from this list ..I would recommend Kyiv,Ukraine ! Delicious food ,rich culture ,beautiful people!
Agreed
Think the list may be written for those who don’t travel a lot, as there are far more cities. Agan, subjective, however, if one travels, you realize there are far more enticing places, and yes, Paris, (which I adore) would not be on the list.
There are at least 100 cities on my Top Ten List …..
A real hidden gem is Tbilisi, Georgia
Definitely Tbilisi.
Hialeah Florida.
Where’s Baltimore?
In Maryland.
Rio de janeiro, Shanghai
Yes and yes!
I’ve traveled extensively in North America, North Africa, Europe, and the Middle East, but there are a lot of places still on my bucket list: Spain, Turkey, South America, and India. Bear in mind that some of the best places to visit are not large cities: Greek islands (especially Crete), Taos and Santa Fe, New Mexico; and Trier, Germany were exhilarating for me.
West Jerusalem Israel
East Jerusalem Palestine
Mexico City!!
I would include Cairo, Merakhesh, Delhi, Lamu in Kenya , Capetown.
Going to Kenya in 5 months. Why Lamu?
If short time, Lamu or Maasai Mara?
Kenya is fascinating ! Masai Marai is beautiful. The animals are fascinating. . . Wild life in plenty, in their natural habitat
totally agree Tom, Cspetown. and Lamu is a favorite
-Meredith
Why can we not love them all? Every place has its majesty, and its history and its destiny. No offence, but ignorance can own an opinion. Give me the world.
What about: Amsterdam,and Krakow???
Yes…you forgot about South America. SO subjective!!!
Two cities I just love:
Quebec City
Toledo, Spain
I have been to 8 out of this 10 cities on the list. My love for a city depends on the experience I had. I love them all PLUS many more cities like everyone has mentioned. London, Rome, Prague, Budapest, Vienna, St Petersburg, Amsterdam, Brussels, Lisbon and more.
I haven’t been to Africa and Egypt, but it’s on my list.
Paris, Vienna, Edinburgh, New York, Venice, New Orleans, Montreal, Quebec City, Barcelona, San Francisco. Runners up: Madrid, Charleston, Florence, Dublin, Savannah, Boston, Santa Fe …
Still on my wish list: Jerusalem,
St Petersburg, Prague, Buenos Aires, Munich, Cairo, Bordeaux, Lisbon, Athens …
You forgot to include Lima, Peru.
Where’s Ocklawaha, Florida ?
Tanzania
Siem Reap, Cuzco, Kathmandu, Praha, Cairo, Marrakesh, St. Petersburg, Havana, Hanoi/Halong Bay, Berlin.
What did you like about Havana
I’ve enjoyed all the comments! I’ve been to some on the list, some others mentioned, and many more. My list doesn’t have to be your list. So many things influence our experience – who we’re with, who we meet, what we see, weather, food, etc as well as what each of us enjoys. The important thing is go! See the world! Try things!
Since I was a child I have yearned to travel the world. Unfortunately the lack of funds has prevented me from traveling much at all. The desire is the same-although I’m now well into my 60’s.
I have visited many of the world’s major capitals/sites…Rome, Paris, London, Nairobi, Beijing, Shanghai, Dublin, Florence, Amsterdam,Havana,
Venice,NYC,LA, NOLA, San Francisco,Mexico City, Miami and Minnetonka, but for sheer livability, lush scenery, great food and historical significance nothing tops Lima, Ohio!
Thank you for the best chuckle I have had since moving to Asheville NC in 1993 from North Ridgeville Ohio!
I loved Florence. And why is Madrid or Barcelona not on the list?
La Paz Bolivia! A magical place and home of Ekeko, the god of household items!
All big cities. How about Taos, Key West, Victoria, Banf, Tsfat.
I also love Victoria
Which Victoria? Not the one in BC Canada. That’s a boring place.
No South American cities? Disappointing.
Potosí,Bolivia
Masai Mara, Kenya
Havana, Cuba
Zaria, Nigeria
Parati, Brazil
Srinagar, India
Penang, Malaysia
Milford Sound, New Zealand
Olinda (Pernambuco), Brazil
Buzios (Rio de Janeiro State), Brazil
Jericoaquara (Ceara), Brazil
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Langkawi Island, Malaysia
Hanoi, Vietnam
Phuket, Thailand
Jackson Hole (WY), US
New Orleans (LA), US
Los Angeles, US
Bangkok and Ayutthya in Thailand. Barcelona, Spain.
Bucket list with choices…
1. London or Paris
2. New York, Boston, or Washington
3. Tokyo or Beijing
4. Quito, Rio or Buenos Aires
5. Quebec or Mexico City
6. Bangkok, Singapore or KL
7. Sydney or Auckland
8. Cairo or Marrakech
9. Jerusalem, Istanbul or Athens
10. Rome, Madrid, Barcelona, Florence
I’ve been to all except Marrakech and Athens. I could list many more. On my bucket list I also have Prague and St Petersburg.
What about Cartagena, Colombia?
I hear that Cartagena is a beautiful city. Nice people too ?
Psst, don’t let this secret out: A real gem in the world is the island of Boipeba, off the coast of Salvador, Brasil.
What is there to see?
Just got home from a week in Egypt. Had lived there 55 years ago & had it on my bucket list to take my daughter to see the pyramids. Saw everything we had on our itinerary & had a great time. Can’t believe how it has grown – from 8 million back then to 28 million today. It is now a city of satellite dishes! Never felt unsafe.
Praha, Barcelona, Budapest, Edinburgh, Stockholm, Rio, Buenos Aires, Cape Town, Kyoto, Mexico City … to avoid the lengthy conversation, I’d suggest a longer bucket list.
All great suggestions! Any such list will of course be subjective. In my humble opinion, Prague really deserves to be in the Top 10. Perhaps more than Istanbul, Varanasi or Florence. Cheers!
Cape Town, South Africa should be included on the list.
Varanasi is imprinted on my mind.
Bangkok should be on the list.
Istanbul is amazing.
Perhaps Marakkesh should be on the list too……i can think of so many places……
As long as you have an armed guard with you at all times.
Hong Kong is nothing but malls and sky scrapers.
I am so sorry that you didn’t get out of the city and explore the rest of Hong Kong
—the islands, the countryside, the street markets, etc. etc. etc. Do try again. Also, while you are in the area, check out Macao.. Skip the casinos and just wander on
the back streets and go up to the Fort and also check out the ruins of the old church which inspired the Governor of HK to write a famous hymn.
I’ve been to many of these cities and enjoyed them all. It I don’t get Dublin. It felt like a big tourist trap to me. I’d love someone to tell me why they particularly enjoyed it.
I loved Dublin for the walk ability, the people, the pubs and the beautiful green countryside!! We spent 2 weeks in Ireland mostly staying at BnB’s in smaller cities and loved it all!!
I agree with you Sue. Dublin is a fascinating city—mostly for its people! Also, I would add Barcelona, Buenos Aires and Copenhagen.
Totally agree – Was there for 2 weeks – Ireland far surpassed our expectations. We plan to return.
Budapest, St. Petersburg & Vienna
I have been to most of the cities mentioned and enjoyed them all……however my African safari and extension to Cape Town by far surpassed any trip I have ever been on! It was the best trip ever! I just wish it didn’t take so long to get there!
NEW ORLEANS !
NEVER AGAIN!
For me Lisbon Must be on this list
Why?
1. Great weather
2. Excellent food
3. History, culture
4. The people
5. Night life
6. Very good wine
7. Everything is very reasonably priced
Bangkok is missing. That place is easily one of the best cities on earth.
What did you like about it; and where is Bangkok?
I’ve been to all of the ten except Sydney, but I’ve been to Melbourne. Surprised that Hanoi and Kathmandu aren”t on the list
Not 1 Latin American city on the list? Havana, Mexico City, Cartagena, Buenos Aires, Rio? Expand the list to 20.
I agree with Budapest and Cape Town, both vibrant, interesting cities. However I would delete Venice; it has unfortunately turned into a tourist-overrun ‘Disneyland’. You should have fifteen years ago before the cruise ships invaded.
I agree with Cape Town and Budapest. I now avoid all cities that are over run by cruise ships. Barcelona was an exception because I am a Gaudi fan. I think these bucket lists ruin the charm of all of these places. Look for the gems off the beaten track and enjoy them before they are over run. I have lives and visited most places in the world. I just left Palermo in Sicily. It was amazing and not too crowded right now.
I am looking for the next little gems. I would appreciate any tips that can be offered. I especially like wine country areas.
For example: Go to Umbria rather than Tuscany.
Check out Todi, Spolletto, Bevagna, Montfalco and maybe fight some tourists to see Assisi.
Akron Ohio. Toledo Ohio Lincoln Nebraska. Minot North Dakota Tacoma Washington
Hilarious! I’ve visited 6 out of the 10 cities on the list. And I agree with the list with some additions. I’ve lived in 4 places in my life, two close to Minot and Tacoma. Those two cities have always been the butt of local jokes in the towns that I lived in. Thanks for the laugh!
Mention My Name in Tacoma;
Its the Greatest Little Town in the World;
I’ve Got a Gal That You’ll Just Adore;
She Was Miss Tacoma Back In 1904;
Everly Brothers ?
From the perspective of human civilization progression, this is a good list because of its diversity. Of course the city should retain a degree of cultural originality and is a pleasant tourist city, not just an archaeological site.
Middle east- jerusalem, check
India – check
China – check
Japan – check
Greek – Istanbul, check
Roman – two represented
France/continental Europe – check
Anglo – new York, check
New continents – Sydney, check.
I would replace Sydney with a non-Anglo city, like Rio de Janeiro, Having two Roman representatives is fair because of the profound influence of Rome on the current world, but taking one to give to another culture is also fair, for example replacing Florence with St Petersburg, or Marrakech, or Cape Town, or Mexico city, or Bangkok.
Within each category it is debatable which city is the best representative. For example Venice / Rome/Lisbon/Barcelona, Tokyo/Kyoto, Varanasi/Mumbai, New York/London. Sydney/Rio/Buenos Aires/Cape Town/Mexico city.
+ Barcelona, +Lisbon.
– Florence, – Varanasi
Venice is mass tourism at its worst and a let down compared to Florence. No African or South American cities on the list is negligence by the author. Dakar, Senegal and Cuzco, Peru are two places everyone should see.
Why New York, New York and not Hong Kong, Hong Kong? Has New York become a country? Well, Hong Kong isn’t China!
Been to most. Strange, no one mentioned Geneva. One of my favorites!
How about Greenville SC?
Prague is a must!
I would add Beijing and Prague.
Prague!
I say we need 15 more and please cover other continents…Africa and South America!
I believe New Orleans should have made the list. It’s the least American city in the USA.
San Francisco, California
New Orleans, Buenos Aires, Mexico City, Havana, Rome, Barcelona, Lisbon?
While this list has some beautiful cities, it omitted some of the most unique, aesthetically breathtaking cities in the world!
Prague is a must
Edinburgh, Scotland; Bern, Switzerland; New Orleans, La, USA; Vancouver, BC, Canada; Paris, France; San Francisco, Ca. USA; Venice, Italy; Singapore, New York, NY, USA; Honolulu, HI, USA are the 10 most unique cities I’ve visited.
I loved Cuzcoin Peru ! It is certainly a ‘must see’city
Very nice list.
A superficial list at its best. Nowadays you ought to do one for each continent or part-continent (Americas, Asia).
Venice and Florance are definitley overrated, as are most things in India. Even paris is vastly overrated to more welcoming European cities with lots to see and do and also with good food & bev: Barcelona, Munich, Vienna – to name a few. Italy ? Milan any time over Venice.
México City is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Incredible history, museums, architecture, food, weather, pedestrian-only streets, and all completely affordable. An easy flight from the U.S. with no jet lag.
Jerusalem is in Palestine.
I’ve been to them all except Sydney. I’d like to see Hanoi and Buenos Aires on the list.
why do people always leave Poland out. was there in August. going back this year. it is an amazing country! I highly recommend.
Portland,Oregon
Add Sri Lanka before it becomes the next Thailand. I just spent 3 weeks traveling the entire country WOW. Beautiful country and people and it still has the charm of an undiscovered place especially in the mountains and small towns. Go fast as just named #1 by Lonely Planet
Yes, thank you!! Planning on retiring to SL eventually.
I love paris
My husband is about to retire and we want to take a bucket list trip. We are considering South Africa or Australia. We have always wanted to snorkel the Great Barrier Reef but also love the idea of a safari. Recommendations please ? We can travel 4-6 weeks
Coming from the US, I would include for snorkeling:Tahiti (Morea or Bora Bora), Fiji,Cairns, Australia ( jungle and Great Barrier Reef), Gold Coast to Sydney and then at least 2 weeks in New Zealand, 1 each covering North and South Island. NZ is fascinating giving you climate from beaches in the north ( plus thermal areas and glow worm caves ) to South Island with glacier walks or helicopter ride to top of glaciers, fiords, Albatross nesting to penguin watching! Less money and time? Drop Tahiti and fly direct to Fiji on the way to Australia. I have done 64 countries and would put NZ right near or at the top!
The best places and cities are where you personally traveled too and had a beautiful connection to the people, customs, traditions and setting and your heart and soul will always be connected to that pace. It’s the wonder of traveling to new places. We all need to make our own list Our experiences are not the same.
Varanasi over Rome? You’ve got to be high!
Lhasa,Tibet.
granted, i did not read every comment, but did not see anyone mention Stockgolm, or Copenhagen???
An extremely Western European biased set! Nothing in Africa or Latin America … 3 of 6 inhabitanted continents. How about Cusco, México City, Buenos Aires, Santiago, Havana, Montevideo, Santo Domingo, Veracruz, Cape Town and Stone Town Zanzibar.
Well I paged through this and it’s possible I missed it but, nobody mentioned a single city in Germany! What’s wrong with you? Berlin! What a great city and so much history! Munich, fun, fun, fun and lovely, Bamberg, and more beautiful than you can imagine the gorgeous city of Dresden! There’s Cologne, Heidelberg etc . The Christmas markets it’s just fabulous! A most beautiful country. You are missing out with your idea of what Germans are like, they’re Great!
Been to all listed. There are others not mentioned that should be must sees as well.
Athens. Everyone needs to climb up the Acropolis to see the Parthenon
STOCKHOLM
Cape Town!!! For me, it’s the most beautiful city on the planet.
London
Dublin
Paris
Barcelona
Rome
Singapore
Manila
Hong kong
San Diego
Sydney
I loved San Diego. Beautiful & easy to get around. The zoo is awesome too!
One word can be used to describe all these destinations. Overcrowded.
Why not get off the beaten path, do a little investigating, and avoid all the other tourists.
Greenville SC, USA
You missed Mexico City, Budapest, Madrid, Bangkok and New Orleans!
i would never spend a dime in Jerusalem
Forget Buenos Aires – unless you like being pick picketed. Southern Chile is one of the world’s best kept secrets. I have been to most of the other places listed.
Glad there’s a lot of votes to add San Francisco. As a semi-local, I’m glad my city should be in that list.
Agree with comments on Quito, Ecuador. Loved that city and would not mind coming back.
Same with Florence. Of course I had memories of wandering the city streets early in the morning and enjoying the city as it woke up. So I’m a bit biased.
Also Reykjavik, Iceland (but it’s okay to keep it our secret).
I would add Cairo, St Petersburg, Buenos Aires and San Francisco. And about 20 other places, too!
So glad you chose Hong Kong ?? over Beijing. So much to do and see there. I lived there and it’s my favorite place in the world.
I thought Old Jerusalem was amazing! Some of my favorite photos are from there.
I have been to nine of them….. My tenth would be Luang Prabang, the old French capitol of Laos…. A real treasure………
What about Mexico City? Montreal?
Like most lists of this nature, no city in South America or Africa is listed. How about Rio, Nairobi, Cairo or Buenos Aires?
Florence, Bah Humbug….was filthy, and way too crowded (although Italy won the World Cup final when I was there). Museums were nice, but so much litter, reminded me of an American military housing area with all the trash laying about.
Siena, Pisa, Lucca…all nicer
Charleston, SC.
NY is a crowded, rude dump.
A co-worker from France visited numerous places in America a couple of years ago.
NYC was LAST place, Charleston was easily FIRST place.
Beauty, grace, charm, sophistication – not words you associate with NYC.
Rome, Barcelona, Lisbon, Prague. Venice is overrated.
I will suggest Peru…. has a rich Inca’s culture like Cusco-MachuPicchu and the beautiful Amazon Iquitos, Arequipa the white city and Ica where they have the Nazca Lines and more beautiful places diversity of exquisite food…..
Sorry, Too predictable in my opinion. Love the lists that highlight places that not everyone else thinks about, although to be fair you alluded it would be kind of predictable.
Varanasi, India. Just returned. No words can describe the beauty and surreal experience of being there. A wonderful guide for a heritage walk through the alleys and streets above the ghats in the old city. Niwas (4th generation and still lives right above the ghats) tour.vnc@gmail.com. We can not recommend him enough! Speaks English very well, too!
Awesome article.
Rome, St. Petersburg, Stockholm, Reykjavik
No love for Portugal? It’s an amazing country with all types of beauty, city, beaches, mountains, castles, old and charming. Lisbon is incredible.
Mr. Stoen,
You omitted the continents of Africa and South America … perhaps some consideration for
Cairo, Fez, Timbuktu, Addis Ababa, Maputo, Johannesburg, Windhoek
Mexico City, Quito, Santiago, San Paolo or Buenos Ares
I m glad Bruges Belgium is NOT on that list …because more tourists are not possible ….But Bruges is the start of modern trade …the family Beurze started what we know now as the bourse in de middle ages and so is the city a hidden pearl …i m glad because i have the privilige to live in the city centre……so of you go alll visit please those other citys ?
I love Bruges.
Going with Bruges. Bruxelles. Liege. & knokke. Ostend. Aussi St.-Jean de Luz, and Biarritz. Berck Plage.
Lisbon was a wonderful surprise. Add in Siena, Barcelona and Salzburg and you have the ultimate list.
I think either or both Buenos Aires or Rio de Janiero should in added.
Scranton, Wilkes Barre AND Scranton!! ???
Khiva, Uzbekistan
My 10 favorite cities (in my limited experience so far!), though perhaps not in order:
Kolkata, India
Darjeeling, India
Simana Bazaar, Nepal
Paris, France
Amsterdam, Netherlands
New York, USA
San Francisco, USA
Toronto, Canada
Reynosa, Mexico
Saint Marc, Haiti
The 15 Cities I hope to visit next, perhaps not in order (subjective, yes; fair):
1) Bangalore, India
2) Varanasi, India
3) Jaipur or Jodhpur, India
4) Mumbai, India
5) Srinagar, (Kashmir) India
6) Mandalay, Burma
7) Jerusalem, Israel
8) London, England/UK
9) Geneva, Switzerland
10) Venice, or Naples, Italy
11) St. Petersburg, Russia
12) Antananarivo, Madagascar
13) Port-of-Spain, Trinidad
14) Georgetown, Guyana
15) Lima, Peru

Hi just wanted to give you a brief heads
up and let you know a few of the images aren’t loading correctly.
I’m not sure why but I think its a linking issue. I’ve tried it in two different browsers and both show the same outcome.
When I originally commented I appear to have clicked on the -Notify me when new comments
are added- checkbox and from now on every time a comment is added I receive four
emails with the exact same comment. Is there an easy method you are
able to remove me from that service? Kudos!

Heya great website! Does running a blog such as this require a lot of
work? I’ve absolutely no understanding of programming but I had been hoping to start my own blog in the near future.
Anyhow, should you have any ideas or techniques for
new blog owners please share. I know this is off subject
however I just had to ask. Kudos!

Hello There. I found your blog using msn. This is a really well written article.
I’ll be sure to bookmark it and come back to read more of your useful info.
Thanks for the post. I’ll definitely comeback.
First of all I want to say superb blog! I had a quick
question in which I’d like to ask if you do not mind.
I was curious to find out how you center yourself and clear your mind
before writing. I have had a hard time clearing my thoughts in getting my thoughts
out there. I do enjoy writing but it just seems like the first 10 to
15 minutes are usually wasted just trying to figure out how to begin. Any recommendations or hints?
Many thanks!
Your way of explaining the whole thing in this post is really
fastidious, every one be capable of without difficulty be aware of it, Thanks a
lot.
I blog frequently and I seriously thank you for your information. The article has truly peaked
my interest. I’m going to take a note of your site and keep checking for new details about once a week.
I opted in for your RSS feed too.
Definitely consider that that you said. Your favourite justification appeared to be at the internet the easiest factor to take into accout of.
I say to you, I definitely get annoyed at the same time as other folks consider worries that they plainly don’t
recognise about. You managed to hit the nail upon the top as neatly as defined out the entire thing without having side effect , other folks
could take a signal. Will likely be back to get more.
Thank you
Hong Kong should be “Hong Kong, Hong Kong” not Mainland China
Not too enamored with large cities, but to have ignore cities in Africa and South America is unforgivable!
Jerusalem is not in Israel unless you belong to Trumpistan, it’s occupied by Israel.

1. Vienna
2. Edinburgh
3 London
4. New York
5. Rome
6. Paris
7. Beijing
8. Istanbul
9. Capetown
10. San Francisco
note: Mexico city is filthy, over-crowded and rat-infested, waste of time; love Greece but Athens is a one horse show ( Acropolis).
On balance, Vienna is the best of them all. Smallish, nicely preserved culture including world-class music, sites, events, and food.
Barcelona, Cape Town, Prague
I was suggested this website by my cousin. I am not
sure whether this post is written by him as no one else
know such detailed about my difficulty. You’re wonderful!
Thanks!
Croatia and Guatemala
My top 10:
1. Paris
2. London
3. Rome including Vatican
4. Budapest
5. Salzburg
6. Salamanca
7. San Francisco
On my bucket list:
8. Istanbul
9. Cuzco and Macchu Picchu (booked)
10. Rio de Janeiro
Also, St. Petersburg, Athens and Kyoto/Osaka
I’ve been to all but India. Several years ago I went to Sri Lanka instead of India.
Awesome website you have here but I was wanting to know if you knew of any discussion boards that cover the same topics discussed
in this article? I’d really love to be a part of online community where I can get suggestions from other knowledgeable individuals that
share the same interest. If you have any recommendations, please let
me know. Appreciate it!
A useful content. My husband and I run a diving center in Cyprus. We want to offer something more than diving to our existing customers. Anyone have any ideas? It can’t be coffee.
magnificent issues altogether, you just received a emblem new reader.
What could you recommend about your put up that you
just made some days ago? Any positive?
Moscow is amazing. Like nothing you expected.
Ummm…Rome, the Eternal City? Athens, the birthplace of democracy (plus a very underrated city)? London?

Another thing I’ve noticed is the fact that for many people, below-average credit is the reaction of circumstances outside of their control. For example they may have already been saddled by having an illness and because of this they have excessive bills for collections. Maybe it’s due to a work loss or even the inability to go to work. Sometimes divorce or separation can truly send the financial circumstances in an opposite direction. Many thanks sharing your notions on this blog site.

One more important aspect is that if you are a senior citizen, travel insurance with regard to pensioners is something you must really contemplate. The old you are, a lot more at risk you happen to be for permitting something bad happen to you while in another country. If you are not really covered by quite a few comprehensive insurance, you could have a number of serious problems. Thanks for sharing your hints on this blog site.
Thanks for the tips you talk about through this website. In addition, numerous young women exactly who become pregnant usually do not even make an effort to get medical insurance because they fear they might not qualify. Although a few states currently require that insurers give coverage no matter the pre-existing conditions. Costs on these guaranteed programs are usually larger, but when taking into consideration the high cost of medical care bills it may be a new safer approach to take to protect your own financial potential.

How about BUDAPEST, Hungary? 1,000+ year history, amazing architecture, great culture, good food, nice people etc. Also, as I understand it is not too expensive.
Cities that should be on the list:
Heidelberg
Munich
St Petersburg (Russia not Florida)
Cairo
Add Prague, Czech republic, Oslo or Bergen, Norway, Cracow, Poland, Amsterdam, The Netherlands, Vienna, Austria. I can think of several others including the Big three in the US – NY, NO, ans SF.
Hey…no Trenton or Jersey City. How bogus!
Varanasi? Stench of death. How can that be amazing? Lots of other cities which provide comfort and knowledge.
Forget New York, overrated.
Lisbon & Porto should be on the must vist list. The island of Madeira is a tropical Paradise, definitely worth a visit over your picks.
