Howard Johnson in Arcata was surprisingly nice!

Pros: Cleanliness, breakfast, swimming pool, mini-gym, and frig and microwave in room.
Cons: I've never liked carpet in a bedroom...it can't be removed and cleaned. Decorative tile would be nice.
Location: The hotel is about 5 minutes from downtown Arcata (great shopping), and about 20 minutes from the Eureka Zoo, Patricks Point and Trinidad.
First of all, I am very picky when it comes to cleanliness and bedding...and our room was clean and tidy when we arrived. After removing the bedspread, which we always do in hotel rooms, we discovered the sheets were so clean they had a crisp feel to them. The mattresses were firm yet comfortable...my back actually felt better when I woke after sleeping on the HJ mattress. We were given a code for internet access and it worked. Cable was okay, no better or worse than other hotels. We didn't notice any highway noise from the direction of 101...good. The complimentary self-serve breakfast had a good selection. Waffles, fruit, bagels and other goodies. Next time, however, we'll reserve a room on the second floor so we can feel safe leaving the window open all night, and we'll remember to bring running shoes for the treadmill and a swimsuit for the swimming pool. All in all, a good experience.

Nice selection of breakfast items

Breakfast was great. Scrambled eggs, sausage, waffle maker, several cereals, several coffees, several teas, more than one juice, couple of fruits, lots of breads and bagels. We ate at 8:00 and there was plenty of food.

This is a perfectly acceptable hotel.

Pros: The staff.
Cons: Better chairs in the rooms! Those chairs are so uncomfortable!
This property is perfectly acceptable. It is near gas stations, groceries, fast food, and a sit-down mexican restaurant. It is clean enough and reasonably priced. The staff is excellent!

Decent hotel for the money

We were on a budget and this hotel helped keep us on it. My boys enjoyed the indoor pool. There was construction going on but nothing that bothered us. The staff was nice and helpful. The only con was that we didn't get to use the continental breakfast because it was way to busy. There was only one waffle maker and it took 3 minutes a waffle, when you have 5 people in front of you waiting that can take awhile so we ended up having to eat out. But overall it was fine. Internet was slow, just FYI

okay for a night

Cons: Poor breakfast
Its okay. As it had no elevator I asked if i could have a first floor not wanting to trudge my suitcase with 2& weeks of clothes up the long staircase. They charged extra. For the first floor. Same took type. Kind of cheesy.

Excellent quality

Pros: Free Internet, Quiet
Cons: Poor breakfast
Check was fast and easy. Plenty of free parking. Room was very nicely appointed. Large bathroom. Breakfast room was very small and typically crowded with only the minimal of offerings. Overall a very good motel.

WORST PLACE EVER!!!

Pros: Free breakfast, Free Internet
The management staff are EXTREMELY RUDE!!! Over charged us for room we reserved. We extended our stay and didn't want to accept our reservation we made online wanted to charge their regular room rate which was $15 more a night. NEVER EVER AGAIN. STAY AWAY!!!!

Good value for the money

Pros: Free breakfast, Free Internet, Quiet
This hotel was a good value for the money. Just be careful of the spa. We went in and within 5 minutes our eyes starting burning. Let front desk staff know the following morning and they said they would check on it. The next day my fiance had an allegic reaction with red spots and swelling =( So although I'd recommend the hotel... Just stay out of the spa!

Great hotel compared to others in area. Great Pool, will stay again.

Pros: Free breakfast, Close restaurants, Free Internet, Quiet
Great hotel. Beds and room very clean and comfortable. Will always stay at this hotel while in area (which is frequently). Only gripe was that tv made very irritating high pitch squeal while on. Other then that everything was fantastic kids loved indoor pool.
