"Wonderful Hotel, Amazing Staff - just stay away from White Restaurant!"
The Hilton Auckland is an amazingly wonderful hotel. The staff is polite, courteous and goes out of their way to assist you. The hotel is shaped like a cruise ship, and we stayed in one of the Bow Suites, which had an amazing view overlooking the harbour as well as ample space to sit and relax and enjoy an evening breeze. We could see the ship yards on the other side, which made for some great activity watching, as well as seeing all the day ferries and sail boats! The room had an amazing king size bed (the only one on our trip of Fiji, NZ and Australia that was not two beds pushed together). The bathroom is huge, albeit could use a little more light for applying makeup, etc. There are more ammenities in the room than you could possibly use - and the coffee pot in the room? Full fledged, state of the art Pod Expresso maker (not a low end kruigg, but top of the line!) Whatever we needed was brought to the room. The in room internet (wired) is not complimentary and is a little pricey, and there is NO wireless (none of the 5 star hotels we stayed at on this trip were, which is just odd in this day and age when a Motel 6 has wireless).
The rooms are tastefully decorated, the hallways are soothing - the staff was just amazing - the room was always clean - the elevator is roomy and quick. The hotel pool is actually suspended above the roadway so you can see legs when you are driving up as there is a clear section to see through (very charming). Even the lovely staff member who did turn down service REFUSED a tip!!! I almost choked (I am from Vegas, and never had that happen before).
This was also the only hotel on our two week journey that not only had a business center that was accessible 24 hours a day, but also had a printer AND was free!! Travelers Note - we were asked for our flight itineraries in immigration on numerous occasions in Fiji and in New Zealand, so keep a printed copy with you - they dont want to look at things on your iphone LOL.
Our only negative was the restaurant White - awful food, slow service, unfriendly - treated us like we were a bother to them (and at those prices, we were NOT bothering anyone). We tried dinner and breakfast the next day (hoping it was a fluke). The breakfast service made the dinner service look wonderful. They took our order, knowing we were waiting on transportation to the airport in an hour. 45 minutes later, the waitress told us they still hadnt cooked our waffles (seriously)? and it would be a little longer of a wait. We said forget it and asked for the check. The waitress told us that was impolite to ask for the check before we were served. I held my temper, asked again for the check for the coffee we had - the manager came over to aplogize, but it was too little too late.
I have told everyone about this wonderful little gem on the harbour (walking distance to almost everything) and people have marveled over the photos (which i shall post soon). Do not let the negative review of the restaurant turn you away! there are PLENTY of terrific places to eat in the Viaduct (stay away from the ones in Prince's Wharf). And make sure you take a reputable car service (our "private car" turned out to be a working mother (with kid)! in her minivan with NO AIR).
Loved Auckland - make sure you take a quick ferry to Devonport - it is beautiful!!!
