Springtime celebrations in Washington, D.C., are something every traveling family will want to be a part of, especially during Memorial Day weekend. You can feel the energy surge in downtown and near the Capitol as people from all over the country gather to learn more about our nation’s great history. In addition to thanking and honoring military members, there are even more wonderful events to enjoy during the long weekend.

Memorial Day in Washington, D.C., means tons of events and parties great for all ages. But do not forget the great attractions available year-round that are well worth working into a busy holiday weekend schedule. Visit free and fascinating museums such as the Natural History Museum and Air and Space Museum or spend some time with the kids at the Smithsonian and the National Zoo. Then, spend some time on the expansive Mall playing Frisbee before paying homage to fallen military members at the Vietnam Memorial and more.

The National Children’s Museum is also open on the federal holiday and will be holding a concert by the Rainbow Rock Band at noon. This show is big on participation, so kids can flex their musical muscles too, along with the members of this fun children’s band.

If you want to head outside the capital city, spend a day at the Chestertown Tea Party Festival. It’s a historical gathering in Maryland that celebrates the British Resistance during the Revolutionary War. There are foot races for children, as well as opportunities to enjoy cultural cuisine and some interactive reenactments of famous historical events along the harbor.

Families into wild rides and shiny bikes should make some time after touring memorials to peruse the always unique Rolling Thunder Motorcycle Rally that takes place every May. On that Sunday more than a half-million bikers will zoom through the city in honor and avocation of our veterans’ rights. Anyone can watch and/or participate in this loud, yet moving, display of support. On the Saturday beforehand, the Rolling Thunder motorcycle organization lays wreaths at the Navy Memorial, which can be viewed by the public.

Celebrations out in the fresh district air are a mainstay on Memorial Day weekend. This all comes to a culmination at the unforgettable National Memorial Day Concert. Televised throughout the country, big names in music and entertainment and those who’ve served our country are all stars of an annual production that takes place at the west lawn of the U.S. Capitol. Watch the National City Orchestra perform patriotic classics up close, and see celebrities like Forrest Gump star, Gary Sinise, advocate for veterans coast to coast. Scope out a patch of lawn space early for the best experience at this Sunday evening show.

The next day, feel pride swell in your hearts alongside other Americans (and people from all over the world) at the National Parade. During the afternoon, marching bands and groups representing all 50 states will stroll down the street, beginning at the corner of Constitution Avenue and 7th Street.

There can be no better place to roam for Memorial Day weekend than the nation’s capital. Grab the family and make a beeline for this festive atmosphere that welcomes all walks of life to honor those who protect the country every day of the year.
