It’s hard to find someone that truly knows Washington, D.C. The city only claims about 600,000 residents, with 70% of the total working population actually commuting into the city from Maryland or Virginia. I, for one, can’t give any true traveler tips for D.C., because the two times I’ve been there I could only stay for a couple days. That’s why I’ve turned to my friend Jen. She’s been living as a bona fide resident of D.C. for over a year now–even working on Capitol Hill! Since this is a rare case in and of itself, I jumped on the opportunity to find out the city’s local secrets.
Where can you see the best view of Washington, D.C.?
Jen: The best view by far would be from The Washington W Hotel. It completely overlooks the White House and some of the major monuments.
Where’s the best running route in D.C.?
Jen: Most people run in Rock Creek Park. It spans miles of city and it’s a great place to disconnect.
Where´s the best place to grab a coffee and people-watch?
Jen: Try Tryst on 18th Street in Adams Morgan. The place is jam-packed all day with students and commuters. At night they have live jazz music.
Where could someone run into a politician?
Jen: Old Ebbitt Grill–it’s one of the oldest restaurants in town. Reservations are often requested.
What about cheap entertainment?
Jen: The Kennedy Center has free performances everyday at 6:00pm!
Last but not least, where do the people of D.C. go for a beer?
Jen: For a southern soul food atmosphere I would recommend Marvins on U Street. The place is inspired by Marvin Gaye, has a great rooftop, and even better chicken and waffles. If you’re looking for something a bit more Mad Men, complete with extraordinary cocktails, turn to Gibson on U Street. It’s a true speakeasy bar; you won’t even find a sign in front of the place.
Lastly, if you´re looking to catch the game at a sports bar, I would go to Public on Dupont Street. Each booth has its own TV, so you can set it to any game you want.
