It’s the time of year when getting a little haunted sounds like a fun idea. Combining the search for ghosts and other spooky encounters is even more fun when you pair it with a weekend road trip. So fill up the car and grab the camera for your own spooky-themed getaway.
Black Belt Ghost Trail
Want to walk among the ghosts? Check out Alabama’s Black Belt Region, home to a variety of ghost stories. Dozens of sites in Dallas, Perry and Wilcox counties include restaurants, hotels, cemeteries and homes. The trail will eventually include all 11 counties in the Black Belt region. A brochure provides a map and the haunted history of each stop on the tour which includes the St. James Hotel (Jessie James’ ghost is said to inhabit a third-floor room) and the Old Depot Museum in Selma where the ghost is said to enjoy playing with the elevator. The trail also includes a site for visitors to view videos detailing the ghost stories. Combine your hunt for ghosts with some civil war history or just enjoy driving along the historic river.

Forks, Washington
Of course, no spooky road trip list would be complete without the Forks, Washington area, of Twilight fame. Located on the Olympic Peninsula, road trips around the area are scenic and plentiful. Forks is the main hub of the area, with lodging and restaurants, but the day trips are the main attractions. Twilight fans should check with the Forks’ visitors center for details on their Twilight Tour, and a dedicated section of their website lists Twilight Points of Interest. There are even Twilight restaurant specials to investigate. When you’re done driving the coastline, the region near Lake Crescent offers numerous waterfalls and hiking options — Sol Duc Falls (one of the most photographed spots in the area) is an easy hike for families. Rent a kayak and enjoy the water or relax at one of the resorts on the lake or take in the hot springs at Sol Duc.

Punderson State Park
The perfect location for a weekend outdoor getaway, Punderson State Park, 40 miles east of Cleveland, is home to Punderson Manor Lodge — famous for a reported slew of troubled apparitions. The park offers camping and a championship-rated golf course and water activities in the summer on Punderson Lake as well as winter activities galore. Take a break from ghost hunting to visit Ohio Amish Country in Middlefield — the fourth largest Amish community in the US or tour Geneva State Park.

Silver City and Wallace, Idaho
A real-life ghost town, mining town Silver City, Idaho, had a population of about 2,500 at its peak, along with the first telegraphic wire in the territory and a small Chinatown. Along with its own newspaper, Silver City boasted more than 300 homes and 75 businesses. With a summer population of about a dozen, Silver City’s winter population is a single soul. Alive and verifiable that is. Enjoy the drive to Wallace to visit the Historic Jameson Restaurant Saloon and Inn where, Maggie, the resident ghost, is often seen in Room #3.
Eureka Springs, Arkansas
Nestled in the Ozarks, Eureka Springs, Arkansas is home to natural springs that have been drawing travelers for their healing powers since they were discovered. Road trips are plentiful around the region, and the 1929 Hotel Seville will help you get your spooky side out. The site of a hospital of questionable repute in decades past, guests now enjoy the search for life from the other side. The drive to the Ozark Medieval Fortress takes you through prime road trip country, so make sure to leave time to stop at some of the wineries and sights along the way. Or, rent a kayak from the Buffalo Outdoor Center and spend an afternoon on the Buffalo National River.
