Wicker Park has become not just one of Chicago’s trendiest areas but one of the nation’s trendiest spots. No visit to Chicago is complete without checking out this diverse, edgy area. Year after year, Lou Malnati’s Pizzeria tops the best pizza in Chicago list for their deep dish pizza and signature sauce. With several locations in the city, including River North and South Loop, you have many Lou Malnati’s options. But don’t let the fact that it’s a local chain fool you. Lou’s is as authentic as it gets.
Another reason that your pizza adventure should include Wicker Park, and just around the corner from Lou Malnati’s Wicker Park location, is Piece Brewery and Pizzeria. As everyone knows, having your pizza without beer can be a bit like wearing shoes without socks. Great beer and top-notch pizza go hand in hand.
Fortunately, this roomy establishment (great for a group!) serves up plenty of brews to go with their pizza making for the perfect pizza pairings around. So go ahead and try Piece Brewery and Pizzeria to see how it stacks up against its local competition!
Not too far away in the Lincoln Park/DePaul area is Pequod’s Pizzeria, which prides itself on its special pan pizza with a caramelized crust. Pequod’s website boasts that their pizza has received many commendations including both local and national votes for “Best Pizza.” Is this really Chicago’s best pizza? Well, of course, that question is sure to generate much debate in the Windy City, but then again, what doesn’t?
The bottom line is that you can’t go wrong with a trip to Pequod’s. The ingredients are fresh and there are many diverse offerings. Getting hungry yet? Wait, there’s more pizza to come!
Two Near North Side locations, The Original Gino’s East and Pizzeria Uno know how to draw a crowd with their tasty and decadent deep dish pizzas. These two icons are located fairly close to one another and have a bit of a rivalry; both are winners and usually make the “best pizza in Chicago” list. If you are in the downtown area, you can’t go wrong with either option.
If you want a little history to go along with your pizza, check out Chicago Pizza and Oven Grinder Company. The infamous Saint Valentine’s Day Massacre of 1929, where gangster Al Capone took out seven hoods all at once, took place right across the street. But don’t worry, it was almost a century ago! Today, your pizza experience will be 100% violence-free.
One pizza option that we can’t overlook with all of this serious competition is Giordano’s. Why? First of all, they are credited with creating the stuffed deep dish pizza. The number of “pizza places” in Chicago is staggering—to the point that we could never explain the legendary Chicago love affair with pizza in one article. All any visitor has to do is look at all the options that are available to quickly understand how deep the love truly runs. While we’ve made some great recommendations here, don’t be afraid to strike out and find a place on your own. The odds are that in Chicago, any pizza place is serving spectacular pies. And for travelers with a love for that perfect combination of crust, sauce, cheese and toppings, this is a very good and tasty thing.
