For me it was an adventure to go by train from Ulaanbaatar to Irkutsk then on up to Olkhon Island, the spiritual home of an ethnic tribe very similar to Mongolian nomads - the Buryat. I didn’t expect Siberia to be so lush. This village was around the shore of the huge expanse of Lake Baikal, which we explored by train. take the circum-Baikal train for a close up exploration of the landscape and villages. The train line is a feat in itself, being carved through rock about a hundred years ago. This is often inhospitable countryside for most of the year. Many of the small villages showed that life was tough and money was tight. Most buildings were quite broken-down.
