Signs at the beginning of the hike to the viewpoint overlooking Nong Kiaow in northern Laos. You will be greeted here with a bottle of water and a firm warning not to stray from the trail.

Laos has the distinction of being the most heavily bombed nation in the world. Between 1964 and 1973, the US dropped an estimated 250 million cluster bombs- about 2.5 million tons- here in an effort to thwart the forward movement of the North Vietnamese Army. Many of these did not explode, and of those remaining only a tiny fraction have been destroyed. Since the bombing ceased, over 20,000 people have been killed or injured by these UXO's (unexploded ordnances), and hundreds more die each year. In addition to claiming lives, these devices destroy large portions of farmland or render them unusable.

Despite all of this, I found the Laotian people to be among the friendliest and most generous that I have met on my travels, even as some recount stories of loved ones who have lost their lives or limbs to UXO's. The natural beauty of the country brought me here, but it's the people that will keep me coming back.

Trekking in the beautiful Laos countryside is an amazing way to see the stunning landscape in this part of the world.
Take a boat trip along the river from Muang Khua to Nong Kuay, for amazing mountain views.

Tip: make friends with other travelers as you will need to hire the entire boat for the trip.
