I have never been to the Big Island, despite having family in Oahu and going there several times over the years. This condo is situated on Ali'i Drive and directly across the street from the beach access for this group of condos. The condo was comfortable and a great place to relax in the evenings after our numerous road trips to Hilo, Volcanoes National Park, and north to Waikoloa. Da Poke Shack is also across the street and super popular! Go right when they open to get great poke and other Hawaiian treats. The condo is a bit older and had wall unit air conditioning, but these held up fine in the evenings and we did not have to run them at night during our March stay (we did run the bedroom overhead fan on low). Overall a nice place to stay and central so you can explore the island. A few things to note:
1. We really enjoyed the little beach across the street, accessed by walking through the parking garage of the building and onto a nice grassy area. There is also an area with white sands to walk into the ocean. Great place to enjoy a beer and watch the sunset and late afternoon surfers.
2. Ali'i Drive is a main thoroughfare for visitors and is constantly busy. Keep that in mind while booking. Street traffic died down around 11pm and the bedroom is on the interior not streetside, which helped.
3. There are wild roosters all over the island. They like to crow. At 2am, at 4:30am, etc. LOL! Also a ton of birds and you will definitely hear them! We thought it was funny but you may want earplugs. Yes, they can wake you up.
4. This area was a great central point to visit other areas of the island. Note that everything is pretty far apart and be prepared for day trips with drives up to two+ hours, like for the Volcanoes Nat'l Park. We did the Saddle Road to Hilo with beautiful scenery between Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea, and drove past South Point with black sand beaches past that when visiting Volcanoes Nat'l Park. Waikoloa with all the resorts is like 47 minutes and was fun to have a drink at the Hilton near the dolphins. See it all and enjoy!
