Church of Transfiguration on the Mount Tabor, Tábor, Czech republic

The mighty Roman Catholic church was built in 1440-1552 in late Gothic style and it is dedicated to the miracle of Transfiguration as described in the New Testament and painted in the main altar of this church.

The church and its tower were rebuilt several times due to fire damages and wars. The gables were changed in Rennaisance style in 1559. The tower has gothical base and baroque dome from 1677. It is 78 metres high and has 250 steps. There was a whole Neogothic redesign made in 1896-98 by Josef Mocker (the architect of Prague Castle Cathedral finalization and of several Prague Towers).

The frequent fires resulted in appointment of the tower guardian who had to blow his horn each 15 minutes in the night in order not to get asleep.

The Transfiguration refers to a miracle which happened to Jesus travelling to Mount Tabor with apostles Peter, James and John. Jesus was transfigured and became radiant speaking with Moses and Elijah. They tell him He is a beloved son of God and the apostles should listen to him as he is his Messenger, the bridge between humans and God, heaven and earth.

Tábor, Czech republic

Town of Tábor was founded in 15th century in the time of Czech Jan Žižka, the one eyed leader of the Christian reformist Hussite movement (followers of Christian early reformer Master Jan Hus, burnt to death in 1415). He is considered as one of the heroes of Czech nation history.

Žižka was a successfull military general. Žižka's tactics were unorthodox and innovative. In addition to training and equipping his army according to their abilities, he used armored wagons armed with small cannons and muskets, presaging the tank of five hundred years later. He was also a master at using geography to full advantage as well as managing the discipline of his troops. He was fully blinded in battle by 1421, but even after that he was victorious until he died in 1423.

The statue of Jan Žižka is made of sandstone and created by sculptor Jan Strachovsky in 1884. It is standing on the main old town's square bearing his name either.
