Reno is fairly easy to navigate without a car; there is a great bus service, as well as taxi and rideshare options. If you'd like to visit Lake Tahoe, you'll definitely want to rent a car. Be sure to request all-weather tires or be prepared to carry snow chains-and actually use them, which can be a challenge-if you're headed to the mountains during the winter.
Spring and fall are the best times to visit Reno. Come in summer and you'll have to be prepared to spend an awful lot of quality time with your air-con, as the temperatures soar into the 90s°F on a pretty regular basis. But spring and fall have plenty of sun with much less sweat, and they're also less popular season with tourists, which means all the more discounted hotel rooms for you.
Reno is a city first and foremost, so you'll need whatever you would normally bring on a city break. But you'll also need items that make spending time outside easy. Here's what we suggest:
An outdoor playground, casinos, and plenty of mining history. The “Biggest Little City in the World” is a gold mine for savvy Nevada visitors.
