Find your spot on the golden arc of sand and let your eyes drift over the shimmering waters of Folsom Lake. Beach lovers and families can have a great day away from the city without the trouble of the long drive to the coast. Granite Bay Beach is located within the grounds of Folsom Lake State Recreation Area, just 25 miles (40 kilometers) east of Sacramento.Bring a picnic and set up beneath the shade of a tree or at one of the many benches. Alternatively, use one of the barbecue pits and set the coals burning to cook freshly caught fish. Alternatively, choose from the range of sandwiches, burgers and more at the snack bar just behind the beach. There is also a catering service for family and large group picnics. Call ahead to book yourself an easy meal on the grass. Watch for the ice cream man too, although he may not come from the direction you’d expect. At Granite Bay Beach, the ice cream truck is a boat. Watersports are everywhere at Granite Bay Beach. During summer the water is warm; you can swim safely in a large, buoyed area watched over by lifeguards. Looking out onto the water you will see sailboats, waterskiers, kayakers and windsurfers. If you feel like joining them, head to the snack bar, where you’ll find a range of watersports equipment to rent. Try your hand at windsurfing or take a gentle tour in a canoe. Those who want to go a bit faster should take a Jet Ski for a spin. There are also paddle boats for a more sedate cruise around the lake.Once you’ve had enough of the water, there’s still plenty to do back on the shore. Toss a Frisbee or have a game of softball on the large grassy areas, or simply lie back in the sun and relax. Granite Bay beach is open daily. There is a small charge for entering the Folsom Lake State Recreation Area.
