Very welcoming Ryokan, with stylish old style room. Just take care not to make noise. But the village is really cute in the middle of the mountain with the 9 public hot springs.

Was a great stay at this great little inn. It may be a bit different than what most western guest expect to find, but I went for the Ryokan experience and was not disappointed. Staff were really great, helpful in scheduling transport to the monkey park and to the train station. Room was clean, good size, and had everything I needed. The town itself is a cute little village and it was a great experience going to all 9 baths in the town. The baths themselves could use a bit more attention... some were in need of a good cleaning. But regardless it was a unique and fun experience to walk around town in a Yakuta and hop from bath to bath. Make sure to get your souvenir towel stamped at each one!

The 9 public onsens (baths) were interesting, #9 was the best imo, but the town itself is captivating.

A dream stay

Fantastic! If you are looking for the plushest hotel with facilities everywhere … then not for you. If you want a beautiful traditional ryokan with access to the baths, clean showers and great service where the staff go extra without even asking then stay here. As a father and two sons staying in a traditional room we had a great time.

The staff was friendly. Upon arrival the guest gets a yukata and a key to 9 public thermal springs around the town, where he may bath freely. Note that they are extremely hot. The staff also offers a free ride to the Snow Monkey Park or Yudanaka Station in the morning.

The ryokan is in the perfect location for wandering around Shibu Onsen and is right next to all the public baths. They provide a shuttle service to and from the local train station in Yudanaka and a free shuttle to the Monkey Park. They have a breakfast menu and serve dinner on some nights but not all, so be prepared to find your own food in the town. Note that the food options can be limited as many places have varying opening hours. The Ryokan is traditional, the rooms are big and clean and you make your own beds. They provide yukata and everything you need to enjoy the public onsens. There are shared bathrooms and limited shower facilities. Gendered bathrooms are on different floors, you may not have a bathroom on your floor. The ryokan has many rooms and gets quite busy so book your shuttles early. The staff were wonderful and speak excellent English. The Ryokan was excellent value for money. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to experience this delightful town without spending a fortune on accommodation.

This hotel and this city was the best part of my Japan trip. I loved staying in a traditional old Japanese ryokan, and I absolutely loved hoping around to all the onsens! Note, they are extremely hot! The staff was wonderful and very accomodating. They offer free shuttle rides to the monkey park or to the train station, so that is wonderful. Ate once there for breakfast, and it was delicious!

The staff were very friendly and helpful making this a relaxed and comfortable stay. It is an old building but well kept. Not as fancy as some places down the road but extra charming. The public onsens were fun to try. Their shuttles are well organized and we had no trouble booking the times to private onsen and monkey park that we wanted. Excellent service and stay and would return and recommend to others.

Would recommend!

Would highly recommend this inn for a stay in the Japanese Alps. The staff are absolutely amazing - nothing is too much trouble for them and they're always around to offer you help and support. There is a free shuttle service both to and from the train station and up to the Monkey park. The rooms are spacious and we were very comfortable on our futons ☺️ The onsen hopping is also a great attraction...worth the trip out of the city to see!

Perfect Winter Getaway

Staying here was a dream. The staff was absolutely amazing and were one of the reasons we would like to come back. They were extremely hospitable and very pleasant to talk to. They were hardworking and answered all of our inquiries about the facilities and surrounding town. They really went out of their way to make us comfortable. We were picked up from the train station, they suggested things to see and places to eat, helped book things, and shuttled us to the monkey park. The cafe downstairs was great, and the rooms and location were the traditional and quiet getaway we were looking for. I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking in this area.

Authentic yet casual ryokan experience. Staff are so accommodating - picked us up at Yudanaka Station outside of normal pickup hours, advised us to stay in the waiting room (freezing cold in February). Following day, drove us to Snow Monkey Park, first stop to drop our luggage, then to the entrance. I accidentally left my Snow Monkey Pass in my luggage, and she drove me back to the first spot to retrieve it!! Thank you for your generous heart ;)))

Stay here forever !!!

When we came out of Yudanaka Station travelling by train from Nagano (~1300 Yen p.p.) we got stopped by an older gentleman who insisted on helping us to find our hotel. I showed him our Expedia reservation and he mumbled: "Hmmm, yes..yes...Koishiya." He had a hard time finding it on his free map and I was waiting for him to offer us an expensive shuttle or for him to hold up his hand for a tip. No such thing! He was a student from the local English school and even ran after us when I decided to take the adventurous road up the hill. "No, no. This road very hard, take the one by the river. Much better." Such kindness and care set the tone of the best day ever at Koishiya. Google Map had a hard time finding the Ryokan (search "Koishiya Yamanouchi") and the address pointed to this shady street next to a fancy looking hotel entrance. Pleasantly surprised we were to find out the fancy hotel was our resting place for the night. Shoes are OK when you enter the lobby, just not in the room. The two boys running the place were more than accommodating and showed us kindly around the building. The room was a traditional Tatami room with low table, mats, and soft mattresses you can lay on the floor. What? No TV? No, and that's better. WiFi, a heater, and the romantic atmosphere was enough. We were offered to go to a super fancy Onsen (natural hot spring) in an amazing hotel nearby...for free?! First time in an Onsen, little bit awkward, but there was barely anyone there.
