San Francisco Beaches

California's rugged coastline is a major draw of the San Francisco area. Head out on blissful coastal hikes and take Instagram pictures that'll make your friends jealous.

Heading to a San Francisco beach is one of the best ways to take in gorgeous views of landmarks like the Golden Gate Bridge and sunsets over craggy rocks.

It won't necessarily be the same type of sun-soaked paradise as the beaches further south, and you may need to wrap up a bit in the evenings and colder seasons, but nothing beats the serenity of many of these sandy hangouts.

Go for a romantic stroll along the water, dig your toes in the sand and wait for the sun to go down. Or take the family out for an action-packed day in the waves.

Here's a handy guide to the best San Francisco beaches for beach lovers everywhere.

Beaches for Great Photos

  • With "fun" being a part of its name, Fort Funston Beach promises a good time, as well as fantastic views of the coast and hang gliders on a clear day.
  • The seclusion of Marshall Beach makes it a great pick if you want to take photos and enjoy views of the Golden Gate Bridge in peace.
  • Stunning vistas of the San Francisco skyline are waiting for you at Treasure Island, a man-made island in San Francisco Bay.

Beaches with Views of the Golden Gate Bridge

  • Baker Beach has beautiful views of the Golden Gate Bridge, as well as plenty of space to roll out a picnic blanket and watch the world go by.
  • Bliss out on China Beach, a small cove offering gentle waves and one of the best views of the iconic structure.
  • West Bluff Picnic Area Beach, near Crissy Field Park, is bordered by the Golden Gate Bridge to the left and has lots of hiking trails.

Beaches for Families

  • Ocean Beach is a long and wide expanse of sand that gives you tons of room to run and play. Let the kids dig sandcastles while you soak up the sun.
  • Enjoy a walk along the pier at Aquatic Park Cove and then admire the boats that are anchored in the harbor.
  • Though not great for swimming, Candlestick Point State Recreation Area provides plenty of space for picnicking as well as grassy play areas.
