1889 Historic Victorian Rich with History

Deer Lodge is the second oldest town in Montana with a rich history. This very special house was built in 1889 for Colonel Thomas McTague, second in command at Montana’s first state prison (also humorously known as Montana’s first gated community). Built with inmate labor, most of the home’s beautiful original details remain. Colonel McTague and Warden Frank Conley left a colorful (and scandalous) legacy at the prison and a tale or two at this house.

This beautiful home is spacious yet warm and cozy. Rich with history and original Victorian details – columns, stained glass, newel post light fixture, antique chandeliers, it offers a beautiful and welcoming environment to relax and spend time with friends and loved one. Enjoy the morning sun, hardwood floors, and chandeliers!

There are two living spaces, so there’s plenty of room to spread out or escape to a quiet corner.
The front parlor is framed by columns, has large bay windows, and a piano. This is a peaceful place to read or have a conversation.

The gathering room at the back of the house looks out on the back yard and a large bank of windows lets the morning light stream in.

The well-equipped kitchen has a gas range with many cooking options, a microwave, and dishwasher, as well as a large, roomy refrigerator.

A sunny dining room with original chandelier and wall scones is a happy room to share meals, play board games, or do a puzzle.

Upstairs, there are three large bedrooms and five stained-glass windows. Each room has a queen size bed, a closet, a dresser, and a desk providing a quiet place to work if needed.

All three bedrooms have lots of natural light, but black-out curtains keep the room dark if you want to sleep in.

A half bath powder room is located on the main floor. A full bath with a tub/shower combo is on the upper floor.

Gather on the small deck for lunch and enjoy the peace and quiet of the private fenced back yard.

Deer Lodge is a small, friendly community with several historic attractions - the Old Prison Museum, the Grant-Kohrs National Park Site (preserved working ranch that belonged to cattle baron, Conrad Kohrs), and the historic Rialto Theater that offers $5 movies most weekends and other live events. The newly remodeled bowling alley has great pizza and wings, a simulator, as well as 8 bowling lanes. The coffee shop, the Tap Room, shopping, and the bakery with the best donuts in the state are all within a short walk.

Deer Lodge is host to many activities and events; far more than you would expect for a town this size.
