From the Viking Age to the modern world’s happiest country, Denmark seems to always be on the cutting edge. Sher She Goes recently returned from a visit to Scandinavia so we asked her to share some travel tips for visiting Copenhagen.

Copenhagen has made a name for itself as a taste maker in all things – architecture, interior design, fashion and food. Add Copenhagen to your travel bucket list today and find out why we’re enamored of all things Danish.

Danish Castles | Sher She Goes

1. The Castles are Royally Epic

Throughout history, the Danish Royal Family has had spectacular taste. From ogling the crown jewels at Rosenborg Castle to the rose gardens of Marselisborg, castles in Denmark are stunning! In particular, we recommend day tripping to Kronborg Castle (made famous by Shakespeare’s Hamlet), watching the royal guard change at Amalienborg in central Copenhagen and exploring Frederiksborg Palace, situated on 3 picturesque islands and home to the Museum of Natural History.

2. Nordic Cuisine is Clean, Simple & Delicious

From open faced sandwiches to sweet Danish snail buns, Denmark has a unique food scene unlike anywhere else. Simple meals like porridge, pork and pastries are elevated in Denmark to near gastronomic heights. Danes love their beer too – take a tour of Carlsberg brewery or try a beer from a local Danish micro brewery while you’re in town! If you want to splurge on a fine dining experience, Noma 2.0 recently reopened in February 2018.

3. Hippies Have Their Own Island

Christiania is a small island in central Copenhagen, home to a real life hippie commune. Both green and car-free, this society lives independently of the Danish government and inhabitants abide by their own way of life. Visitors can go for a stroll through Freetown’s art galleries, music venues and workshops – just don’t take any photos!

4. It’s Possible to Visit on a Budget

Copenhagen is expensive, but travelers on a budget can still have a great time in the Danish capital! Skip the price tag of a Michelin starred restaurant but not the flavor by dining at its popular food markets where you can try small bites from around the world. Or, try a gourmet hot dog street side with your choice of toppings! To save on sightseeing and transportation, buy a Copenhagen Card which includes free admission to 79 attractions and unlimited metro, bus and train rides. Finally, check Travelocity for great deals on hotel and airfare!

5. It’s Best Explored on Bike!

Danish cities have their own bike highways – that’s how serious the Danes are about cycling. One of the best ways to explore Copenhagen like a local is to rent a bike and explore the sights and hidden corners. Luckily, the city is pretty flat and small enough to even day trip on a bicycle.

The Danes are consistently ranked among the happiest people in the world. With a culture focused on simplicity, politeness and equality, Denmark seems to have nailed the art of balancing both work life and personal happiness.
