Niagara Falls is one of the very first tourist attractions in the United States—it’s a destination that still attracts millions of visitors each year. We wanted to know about some of the things to do beyond Niagara Falls USA, so we asked Mike Shubic of MikesRoadTrip.com to share a few of his suggestions.

Tourists from around the world head to northwestern New York, along the Canadian border, to experience the beauty and allure of Niagara Falls USA. Visitors may not know this, but there are actually three waterfalls that make up Niagara Falls, with many different vantage areas to take in the splendor of this iconic place.
Visitors may also not realize that there are many wonderful things to do beyond the falls. Here are my five favorite things you can’t miss when visiting Niagara Falls USA.
Old Fort Niagara
The majority of visitors to Niagara Falls completely bypass Old Fort Niagara, which is at the top of my list of things to do when visiting the area. Located just 15 miles north, on a bluff overlooking Lake Ontario, Fort Niagara is one of the oldest military installations in the country.

Visitors are able, and encouraged, to immerse themselves into this historical site. The large complex has drawbridges, bunkhouses, lookout towers and other artifacts to peruse. Along with platoons performing marching exercises, armed guards with muskets in hand dressed in period attire, as well as many other demonstrations and re-enactments to observe, you truly feel like you’ve stepped back in time.
Lewiston
Lewiston is an idyllic village located in the same direction as Fort Niagara, but half as far. This charming community is absolutely worth a visit. You’ll find a music and cultural venue called ArtPark that attracts some surprisingly big names. There are also top-notch restaurants, public artwork and outdoor recreation.

There are several wonderful hiking trails in and/or near Lewiston. The upper ArtPark Gorge Trail offers a gradual climb to the top where it meets up with the rim trail, which leads to Devil’s Hole State Park and overlooks the Devil’s Hole Rapids. The park has an incredible scenic overlook along with picnic areas, and is one of the more popular spots for fishing.

If you’re a foodie, Lewiston has some of the best restaurants in the area. Here are some of my favorites:
- Casa Antica – Incredible Italian food prepared by a close-knit family.
- Brickyard – Fantastic brews and barbecue.
- Carmelo’s – A fine dining adventure.
- Orange Cat Coffee – Cool café with uniquely infused coffee blends.
- Tommy George’s – Great greasy spoon for breakfast. Try the mixed-egg dish.
- Cask + Cow – Serving up gourmet burgers with specialty toppings.

If you wish to stay in Lewiston, Niagara Crossing Hotel & Spa is a solid choice. There also are some charming B&B’s in Lewiston.
Whirlpool Jet-Boat Ride
For those who like to get their adrenaline going, a jet-boat ride will surely do it! Guests travel up the Niagara River in a custom-built jet boat while experiencing the excitement of going through class 5 rapids—then, accelerating up to 60 mph while doing a 360-turn in the middle of the river. It is indeed a wet-and-wild adventure like none other. It’s worth noting that this activity is located in Lewiston.

Lockport
Lockport derives its name from a set of locks along the Erie Canal. Lockport offers many interesting activities beyond Niagara Falls. For starters, the historic tours of the famous Erie Canal is a must. This was an engineering marvel that connected the Great Lakes with the Atlantic Ocean and transformed commerce and transportation in the early 1800s. Don’t miss taking the underground boat ride, which is both peaceful and eerie. You will be immersed in history on one of the longest underground boat rides in the country.

If you prefer to stay above ground, taking a cruise along the canal and experiencing the lock system is also a great activity. The Upside Down Railroad Bridge is another unique engineering feat, whereby the up side is down and the down side is up. Walking under the bridge along the canal has its own special sensation.
Wine Tasting
Believe it or not, Niagara has a burgeoning wine industry, with a wine trail that has over 20 wineries along with a few breweries and cideries. The wineries are open year-round for tastings and have many annual events.

The region is probably best known for its ice wines, but you’ll also find CabFranc, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling. The most popular native grapes grown are the Concord and Niagara. They also have many wineries that infuse wine with local fruits, such as apples, cherries, and peaches.
While in Niagara Falls …
Niagara Falls and its surrounding areas are rich in historical significance. For example, the falls were first discovered by French explorer Louis Hennepin in 1678. Soon after, the area became a French stronghold, with forts being built at the mouth of the Niagara River, creating what is now modern day Fort Niagara. The village of Lewiston was the site of the first battle of the War of 1812, and the last stop for slaves escaping to freedom in Canada via the Underground Railroad.

So, as you can see, there is a lot to do beyond the falls in Niagara Falls USA. Whether it’s the history buff in you, the adventurer, or you’re heading to the honeymoon capital of the world; Niagara Falls has something for everyone. If however you plan to stick close to town, here are a few things to help you with your planning.
